In a recent speech to the American Society of International Law (ASIL) the legal advisor to the State Department, Harold Koh, stressed the “most important difference” between the Obama and the Bush administrations is their “approach and attitude toward international law.” Koh said this difference is illustrated by an emerging “Obama-Clinton Doctrine,” based on a commitment to four main principles: “principled engagement; diplomacy as a critical element of smart power; strategic multilateralism; and the notion that living our values makes us stronger and safer, by following rules of domestic and international law; and following universal standards, not double standards.”

The commitments to “principled engagement” and “living our values” are especially vital to advancing human rights. For years, U.S. leadership on the world stage has suffered because the U.S. seems to hold a double standard on human rights. Historically, notions of U.S. exceptionalism and selectively ignoring injustices and human rights violations at home and abroad have bred mistrust of U.S. leadership based on our incomplete commitment to universal human rights. The Obama administration, however, has committed to leading by example. According to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, this means “holding everyone to the same standard, including ourselves.”

In many areas, the administration’s actions have matched its rhetoric. Joining the United Nations Human Rights Council and signing the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities have both sent the right message that President Obama is prepared to engage with the international community on new and more principled terms than previous administrations. The appointment of many officials who are self-defined human rights champions with careers both inside and outside the government promoting civil and human rights evinces a commitment to “a vision of common humanity, universal rights and rule of law.” Moreover, the willingness of this administration to work with members of civil society to align our human rights rhetoric with our human rights practices demonstrates a commitment to lead by example based on both “principled engagement” and “living our values.”

These efforts, however, are not enough. What we have yet to see are new bold steps that prioritize human rights at home. This administration has not adopted domestic policies designed to translate its rhetoric and commitments into reality. And although the administration has made positive statements about the indivisibility of rights and the importance of recognition of economic, social and cultural rights, there has been no concrete action to fully incorporate those principles into domestic policies. “Principled engagement” and “living our values” require nothing short of a complete reversal of the positions, policies and practices from which this administration has assiduously worked to distance itself. This is the type of change an Obama presidency promised. This is the hope on which many relied when casting their votes in the 2008 election.

The Human Rights at Home Campaign was launched shortly after that historic election. A coalition of more than 50 human rights, civil rights and social justice organizations, the campaign is working to strengthen our country’s commitment to human rights at home and abroad. Its goal is to create a national political culture that supports and advocates for human rights. Essential to achieving that goal is establishing a human rights infrastructure to fulfill human rights promises and legal commitments made by both Democratic and Republican administrations and congressional leaders. To this end, the campaign has endorsed four specific objectives:

• revitalizing an Interagency Working Group on Human Rights to coordinate the efforts of the executive departments and agencies both to promote and respect human rights and to implement human rights obligations in U.S. domestic policy;
• transforming the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights into a U.S. Commission on Civil and Human Rights, to expand its mandate to include not only civil and human rights issues, but also monitoring human rights implementation and enforcement efforts, and to make structural reforms to improve the commission’s ability to function as an independent national human rights institution;
• ensuring meaningful government compliance with the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, which the U.S. ratified in 1994; and
• strengthening federal, state, and local government coordination in support of human rights.

As a first step, the campaign has been calling on the administration to issue an executive order reconstituting the Interagency Working Group on Human Rights (IAWGHR). Initially established by President Clinton, this working group coordinated efforts within the executive branch to monitor, implement and enforce ratified human rights treaties. The Bush administration disbanded the working group, replacing it with a weaker interagency policy committee on human rights which mainly coordinated the submission of U.S. periodic reports to human rights treaty bodies. A reconstituted IAWGHR is one of the cornerstones of an effective human rights infrastructure, and a new executive order is absolutely imperative to putting this cornerstone in place.

Issuing a new executive order will increase the effectiveness and coordination of the efforts of the executive branch to meet our domestic human rights obligations by creating, in one standing body, an identifiable focal point for the administration’s human rights activities and policy work. An executive order that creates a mechanism that ensures organized interagency coordination will better enable the United States to meet its articulated commitments to “principled engagement” and “living our values.” In addition, this type of mechanism would establish a specific structure with a systematic and transparent process for handling human rights and would enhance federal, state and local coordination in support of human rights.

In addition to being a major symbolic achievement, issuance of an executive order sets forth a definitive plan, displays assertive action and lays the groundwork for the demand that other nations follow our lead.

Take action and join the Human Rights at Home Campaign, the ACLU and Amnesty International USA in calling for a new and comprehensive executive order on human rights.

After nine days in Morocco, it’s been interesting seeing a different part of the world, especially after three weeks meeting with producers in familiar spots in Europe. I adore Paris and spending time in Germany, but I looked forward to my research trip in Casablanca and Marrakech, and popping in on my French cousin Daniel in the coastal city of Agadir.

Morocco is a helluva lot different from what I’m used to seeing, not having been in a Muslim country since Istanbul in 1998. It was intriguing to note the hawkers and their myriad selection of goods spread on blankets all over the sidewalks. Plus, the parade of locals in a variety of attire, from western jeans to women in burkas, which covered everything but their eyes.

I visited as many places as I could, but what I couldn’t appreciate or ever get used to was the ubiquitous presence and acceptance of beggars as a part of everyday life.

I understand begging isn’t exclusive to Morocco, and please understand I realize that misfortune makes people do the unthinkable. I’ve witnessed the practice in India, Brazil, Egypt, Thailand and even Los Angeles. When I’m in Paris, considering the number of subway lines in their Metro system, it seems that there’s just about always someone in the car I’m riding in, though most purport to be entertaining us as a captive audience before accosting us with pleas for financial support.

None of this makes it right, nor should we have to stand for it, or in some way consider it a fascinating part of travel, as in the comment of one person, who said “That’s Morocco.”

I don’t care if it’s Morocco or India or someone with their hand out in Beverly Hills. If I’m walking around or sitting in a café or lying on the beach I don’t want to tense up as I see someone approach in my peripheral vision. I don’t think it’s someone’s right to continually try to get my attention, whether with a pseudo hello and, when you don’t respond, ten or twenty follow-ups to force me to deal with them.

I had a man following me in Casablanca, and I zigzagged around cars trying to get rid of him, only to be saved by a cab driver who stepped in and told the guy to stop bothering me. There were many decent and kind people I met in Morocco, giving me directions or chatting at various tourist stops. While I’m not thrilled at aggressive salesmanship, I understand it’s part of the game, especially if I step into a commercial venue such as a souk.

But when I’m eating I draw the line. Why should any of us have to worry while eating al fresco? Isn’t it our right? What gives a person, no matter their state of poverty, the right to bug us to the extent that they exploit their young children?

This happened to me a number of times, after which I had to retreat to indoor dining to escape what had become more than annoying. In the Marrakech Medina, where many makeshift restaurants open up at night and where diners sit at long tables, schmoozing with the staff and other tourists over roasted lamb, beef and chicken dinners, a procession of beggars continued their offensive. Some thrust packages of Kleenex at you; others cookies; still others offer nothing and just want your money.

It wouldn’t be so bad if they took no for an answer, as was my experience in Bangkok, but the same people keep coming back, making them, and I’m sorry to have to say this, more akin to flies and other nuisances. And where are the child welfare organizations to prevent parents from sending them out to make a living? In Marrakech, there was almost a fist fight between a man, presumably one of the stall owners, and an elderly lady, who was somewhat of a Fagin character with young charges under her wing. He was ordering her out of the area and she was defending her right to be there.

There is a middle ground between such an intrusion in our lives and our desires to be compassionate. However, to put up with this sort of behaviour simply encourages its perpetuation. If more people boycotted such countries and strongly affected the billions of dollars that tourism brings in, perhaps the governments would do something to eradicate the misery that has caused so many of its citizens to behave no better than animals.

It’s not as if Morocco is such a poor country; many of its people are at the very least lower middle class and there are a lot of professionals who live well. But what bothered me almost as much as the annoyances I’ve described was the eagerness of the tour guide at the Hassan II mosque in Casablanca, who told us that it cost 800 million dollars. It was her belief that it really cost four times that amount, and she said the money came from the king and the rest of the population.

To this I’d ask, why are they spending so much money on huge, gorgeous mosques and mausoleums to dead kings such as Mohammed V in Rabat when that money could be going to social programs which might elevate young people from the blight that surrounds their lives and gives them a ticket to nowhere while turning them into horrible human beings.

It’s too simple to say, hey, if you don’t like that sort of thing stay in the relative comfort of the USA or just visit countries in the First World. Why should any of us have to? Why shouldn’t we be able to visit different cultures without this sort of abuse? Why don’t CNN’s Anderson Cooper and journalists at MSNBC, Fox News, NBC, CBS and ABC do reports about this to bring another dimension to what has become for many travelers not only an ordeal but in some instances a nightmare?

After a woman tried to get my attention without success, she actually waved her hand several times in front of me, eventually getting a couple of inches from my face, at which time her little boy started eating ice cream in my bowl. You think that’s cute? Well, I don’t, and my reaction was to angrily stand up and shout, at which time the waiters finally shooed her away.

Begging is not necessary and it’s an abomination. But it will never go away until we become the aggressors instead of passive accomplices, as well as providing some constructive end to this human stain.

The Coast Guard estimates 5000 barrels of crude oil a day, 210,000 gallons a day, are pouring out of a damaged British Petroleum (BP) well in the Gulf of Mexico since the April 20 Deepwater Horizon rig explosion. Eleven people died in the explosion. The oil rig burned and sank. The exploratory well, which is 50 miles away from the coast, continues to powerfully disgorge oil from the bottom of the 5000 feet deep surface of the Gulf.

Oil has now reached the Louisiana coast. The Associated Press (AP) reported there is an oil slick 130 miles long and 70 miles wide in the Gulf of Mexico. Birds covered in thick black oil have already been recovered. Efforts to stop the oil have not proven effective. The AP reports the oil is expected to reach Mississippi on Saturday, Alabama in two days and Florida in three.

Late Friday afternoon, the Mobile Press Register reported a confidential government report prepared by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Emergency Ops concluded that if the pipe on the Gulf floor “deteriorates further, the flow could become unchecked resulting in a release volume an order of magnitude higher than previously thought.” An uncontrolled release of oil “could become an unchecked gusher shooting millions of gallons of oil per day into the Gulf.”

Plans to set parts of the Gulf on fire have been pushed back by bad weather. The unprecedented idea was to burn up the oil spill before it reached land. “This is a great tool,” promised a BP representative.

In response, one long-time Louisiana resident said, “You know you’re in very serious trouble when the solution is for BP and the feds to set the Gulf on fire.”

Worst hit in Louisiana are the coastal areas of Plaquemines and St. Bernard Parishes – just now limping back from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

On Friday afternoon, federal and state officials held a joint press conference in Louisiana. Curiously, they held their conference with BP representatives. Officials characterized the situation as dangerous and unprecedented. Government representatives said they were pushing BP to increase its efforts to stop the oil because current efforts have not been effective. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano flatly acknowledged that the U.S. is working closely with BP.

BP has caused a lot of trouble lately. The Pulitzer Prize winning news site Pro Publica reported BP “has found itself at the center of several of the nation’s worst oil and gas-related disasters in recent years.” BP recently plead guilty to federal felony charges related to a massive explosion in Texas where investigators found ignored safety rules and a disabled warning system. BP is also accused of responsibility for several recent spills in Alaska.

Why then would federal and state officials hold a joint press conference with BP, given the multinational corporation’s role in the unfolding disaster? Perhaps the reason was hinted at by a comment from the Secretary of the Interior in which he cautioned that the U.S. depends heavily on oil and gas production in the Gulf of Mexico. Even though the White House protested that the oil spill is not President Obama’s Katrina, a public partnership between the perpetrator BP and the government certainly has the potential to become a “Katrina moment.”

Louisiana is trying to deploy 6000 members of the National Guard. Air Force planes have been called in to spray chemicals on the oil. National Guard soldiers in Louisiana are currently “engaged in the planning of the effort to evacuate and provide security and clean up for the coastal communities expected to be impacted by the spill.” They are also planning for the protection of medical facilities, fuel distribution, interstate highways, and power facilities.

Louisiana has already started setting up its shelter program for people with special needs who may have to be evacuated because of concerns about air quality.

Official states of emergency have already been declared along the coasts in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

Along the Louisiana coast, people fear the loss of the fishing industry. In New Orleans people worry about air quality.

Thousands of pelicans, herons, egrets, ibis, frigate birds, and rarities like grebes and albatrosses are at risk from the river of oil. Dolphins are birthing at this time so their offspring are at risk. Shrimp and oyster fishing grounds are being closed.

Air quality for humans is another serious issue. The New Orleans area, home to hundreds of thousands, has already been blanketed by a chemical odor.

The head of the Louisiana State Health Department Jimmy Guidry said the smell is an irritant, affecting people with lung conditions and asthma. He said it is normal for the smell to arrive before air quality checks could detect anything harmful. Officials with the Louisiana Health and Hospitals and Environmental Quality said changes in air quality can cause nausea, vomiting or headaches for people who are sensitive. Air sampling was started by the Environmental Protection Agency Thursday and water sampling started Friday. No reports have been made public so far.

Governor Jindal has asked that the feds declare a commercial fisheries failure for Louisiana. The state supplies about one-third of the seafood harvested in the lower 48 states – about $2.85 billion worth a year. Louisiana has put price gouging laws into effect forbidding the raising of prices on gasoline, petroleum products, hotels, motels, and retailers.

Jindal told the press Thursday that he has asked several times for a detailed plan of how Coast Guard plans to handle the situation, but he has “not seen a quantifiable plan.”

In an ominous note, lawmakers, according to USA Today, say they have been told that not only is light crude headed towards the coast, but so too is heavy asphaltic oil.

“This isn’t a spill. This isn’t a storage tank or a ship with a finite amount of oil that has boundaries. This is much, much worse,” said Kerry St. Pe, the former head of the Louisiana oil spill response team. The Gulf spill is really a river of oil flowing out of the bottom of the Gulf according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

In 1975, the New Orleans group, The Meters, released their album Fire on the Bayou. The album cover featured an apocalyptic orange and yellow painting of a bayou ablaze. In 2010 the idea of a fire on the bayou may well be coming true.

Two weeks ago today, my husband and I drove to Palm Springs from San Francisco for a golf vacation. We were following the sun to escape the rainy Bay Area. It was “heads” for Phoenix or “tails” for Palm Springs. The California desert won the toss, and so we set out on our journey. What began as a warm and relaxing trip ended with my husband having emergency surgery at Eisenhower Medical Center (EMC) in Rancho Mirage.

In my thirteen-plus years as a manners consultant, hospital etiquette is one subject I had never given much thought to, as most of my clients are interested in the basics: dining, telephone, or e-mail etiquette. What then, is the proper etiquette when you are visiting a patient? Are cell phones allowed? Is food an accepted gift? Is it ok to “tip” nurses and volunteers for good care? All of these questions and more arose as we played the waiting game to see if John’s conditioned worsened. It did, and our trip to the ER ended with him in the OR some four days later.

I LIKE IKE
For most people, a hospital experience is generally not positive. Unless you are celebrating the birth of a child, hospitals are not happy places. That is what I believed, anyway, until I met the staff and volunteers at EMC. The minute we walked through the ER door, we were greeted by friendly staff, even though they were dealing with life-threatening situations. In an environment where needles, tubes, and rubber gloves reign, I felt oddly at home. Complimentary valet parking greeted us at the front door. The waiting room was like a hotel lobby, and strong coffee was always nearby. Purell hand sanitizer became my lotion of choice. Martin Yan of Yan Can Cook fame was even doing a food demonstration in the cafeteria. Maybe we weren’t really in a hospital? Was this a dream?

I love uniforms, and found it absolutely fitting that all hospital volunteers wore red, white, and blue smocks–with you guessed it–five stars in honor of our thirty-fourth president, five-star Army general Dwight D. Eisenhower, the hospital’s namesake. (The land for the hospital was donated by Bob Hope, and the Eisenhower’s were part-time residents in the desert). Even my husband’s anesthesiologist had an I LIKE IKE button from the 1952 Republican Convention pinned to his scrubs. Impressive. They may take this military thing very seriously, but I’ll say this: We didn’t need to ask for help, because those five stars were happily greeting us at every turn.

Do’s and Don’ts for Visitors

â?¢ Never sit on a patient’s bed. Chairs are provided for visitors. However, if they are occupied, then stand.

â?¢ Don’t wear perfumes of any kind.

â?¢ If you need to use your cell phone, do so in the lobby, not in the patient’s room or the hallway corridors.

â?¢ Ask the nursing staff ahead of time if it’s okay to bring in food. The patient may be on a liquid diet and it would be cruel to have him/her smell chocolate chip cookies. Plants, books or magazines are safe alternatives.

â?¢ Never overstay your welcome. Less is more when it comes to visiting hours.

â?¢ If the nurse or doctor comes in, leave the room to give them privacy.

â?¢ Be careful when making physical contact with a patient. Find out if it’s okay to touch him/her. Then take care when hugging or kissing the patient, especially if he/she has wires or tubes inserted. Comforting a patient by holding hands is almost always a good idea, unless the hands are somehow damaged.

A Senior and Celebrity Haven

My last visit to Palm Springs was in college, twenty-five years ago. I don’t recall much from spring break except sun and fun. Today, this place is part Hollywood, part Vegas. At the intersections, street signs have names like Hope, Sinatra, Ford, and Shore. The desert is also home to the Betty Ford Center and the Annenberg Estate. As I said, it’s a bit of Hollywood but with a country club twist, where golf is the favorite pastime.

In Rancho Mirage, the median age is 61, so–luckily for us–great health care rules the town. Thank you to all our “Nurse Bettys”–Cathie, Ana, Christie, Anita, Amanda x2, Olga, Roxanne, and Eugenia–and of course our surgeon, Dr. Nguyen, a Vietnamese Dr. Oz: spunky, hip, full of energy, and smart as a whip!

Hope in the Desert

Our spring holiday may have been interrupted, but it was not without its humorous side. Even though life revolved around Room 467, all 180 feet of it, I still giggle when I think about eight incidents that took place, one for every day of John’s stay in the hospital:

1. Shopping at an all-night Walmart for any and all tabloid magazines. My personal favorite: celebrities without makeup.

2. My husband (high as a kite from painkillers) liked everything I bought for him at the outlet mall. This was a first.

3. Me being mistaken for a senior and given the senior discount while buying coffee in the cafeteria. No one under fifty buys coffee?

4. Sharing ice chips with my spouse (seriously) was the highlight of my day. In separate cups, of course.

5. Getting through the day by reading Kitty Kelley’s book on Oprah. It worked.

6. Finding that everything my husband said was funny, even though we were together twelve hours a day. I cannot explain this one.

7. Being “busted” by a weekend nurse for talking on my cell phone in the children’s playroom. There were no kids in the playroom.

8. Writing this blog from a purple pleather La-Z-Boy recliner in our room.

Home at Last

On departure, our friend Larry from San Francisco and Palm Springs asked if we’d ever be coming back. My husband growled an emphatic no. I, on the other hand, had mixed feelings. The days were long and the atmosphere sterile, but desert hospitality took me by surprise. I was shown kindnesses by complete strangers, from the hotel staff (thanks, Bruno!) to the EMC staff, volunteers, and other visitors. My daily drive to and from the hospital offered spectacular snow-topped mountain views. Our friend Tom arranged air transportation home for us, and our new friend Richard flew in from San Francisco just to drive my car home!

All in all, I was able to make the best out of a not-so-great situation, and we were both rewarded in spades: a clean bill of health for John, coupled with oodles of prayers and love, calls, and e-mails from countless family and friends.

Last night, I listened to Morgan Freeman say, on American Idol’s “Idol Gives Back”, “Literacy is the ladder out, but we must be fit enough to climb.” That statement hit me strongly when I heard it and its impact is still pressing me.

Morgan was with Randy Jackson on a visit to Idol’s Save The Children partnership in Mississippi…But they could have been “Anywhere” USA, or Canada, or UK – Anywhere in the world. And they could have been as easily in a company as a community. Literacy is an issue….It is not only the ladder up…It’s the bridge across. Literacy is not just knowing how to read with comprehension the books placed before students on a campus. It’s about comprehending the language of business, and knowing the difference between comprehensive information and pre-determined statistical data. Literacy is about empowerment.

How well are we doing with this? How truly empowered do we feel?…How truly empowered ARE we? Do we trust one news delivery over another? Do we trust one advertising or marketing campaign over another? Do we trust one political party or politician over another? If so, why?

Haven’t we yet learned to research and read for ourselves? My alma mater, North Carolina A&T State University, prides itself on teaching students to learn to think – not what to think. While I did not complete all of my studies there, I have brought that empowerment with me throughout my life and professional growth. As a matter of fact, I recall a conversation I had with Dick Gregory during half time at a Laker win at the Staples Center years ago. The BIG thing, he said, and that I have taught in varying applications since, was that he made a habit early in his career to get off the plane, train or bus at each stop to a travel destination and buy every newspaper he could – local and national – and read what each had to say about the issues of importance to him. By the completion of his destination, he felt he could line through rhetoric and get the essence of ‘what was what, and who had said it”.

We live in a much more technologically enabled world today, and we can get multi- and deeply sourced information without getting out of our seats. We can turn on our phones or our laptops. We just have to turn on! So, in a world and time where more information is more accessible than ever, and more issues are more connected than ever, our futures, no matter where in the world we live, are literally tied together. (American Idol’s Idol Gives Back has proven that information and help is just a text message away.) Why then don’t we make the literal effort to learn…Truly learn…Not just listen to condensed or rinsed information thrown at us…but really read. Then again, if you’re reading this, I’m preaching to the choir. Okay…now, choir…go out and sing to the world. Others may listen…and they may, too, come into a new dawning of citizen literacy.

Night Train Bobsled

Team USA won its first Four-Man Bobsled race in 62 years, taking home another Gold medal for America. The foursome, who call themselves the Night Train team, went into today’s race in first place, and held that position all the way through the heat. The team performed the “Holkey Dance” for NBC in their interview after they received their medals in celebration of their gold. The dance is named after their pilot, Steve Holcomb, who went into today’s race calm, cool, and collective.

“This will take a while to sink in,” Holcomb said after winning the Gold medal. The team came out of their sled already celebrating their victory, and wrapped American flags around each other. Hugs were shared by all team members and the coaches. It was a celebration not only for USA-1, but for all American bobsled teams. The last time Team USA won a Gold medal in this event was in St. Moritz at the 1948 Winter Olympics.

KARACHI: Asmat Siddiqui, mother of Dr Aafia Siddiqui said the US court verdict against her daughter has exposed the real face of the USA and US downfall has now surely set in, Geo News reported late Wednesday night.

Talking to media late night, the mother of innocent Dr Aafia urged the people of the country not go on rampage in protest against the verdict, adding she is glad that her daughter is guiltless and innocent and the verdict is a gravely insulting slap on the face of the US.

She also thanked for the role played by the media. She said she is deeply grateful to Allah who has given her a daughter like Aafia.

She said had Aafia been guilty, she would have herself punished her daughter, adding she would not beseech for mercy.

Darin Hinshaw enters his third season responsible for the Tiger receiving corps. A former UCF standout, Hinshaw was hired in March 2007. Hinshaw had one of the most experienced and talented groups on the team last year, and two of his receivers, Duke Calhoun and Carlos Singleton, are on pace to end their careers in 2009 as the top two wideouts in school history. Singleton led the 2008 Tigers with 791 yards and five touchdowns, while Calhoun totaled 487 yards and three touchdowns. Five receivers had 25 or more receptions and over 200 yards receiving last season, and the receiving corps was responsible for 19 total touchdowns.

In his first year with the Tigers, Hinshaw inherited a deep stable of receivers who showed great poise and maturity while leading the Tiger offense in 2007. Tiger receivers accounted for 27 of the team’s 33 offensive touchdowns that season. In six of the last seven games of 2007, Memphis produced a 100-yard receiver and in two contests, had multiple 100-yard receivers. Calhoun was named to the C-USA Coaches and Media second team while Maurice Jones, Earnest Williams and Singleton received honorable mention accolades.

Calhoun led the Tigers in receiving with 890 yards and five touchdowns on 62 receptions while Singleton led the team in scoring with 11 touchdowns and three two-point conversions. In total, five wideouts logged 350 or more receiving yards, and this highly-talented group was key to Memphis ranking 13th nationally in passing offense and 23rd nationally in total offense.

Hinshaw joined the U of M staff after serving one season as the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Georgia Southern under former head coach Brian VanGorder. In 2006, Georgia Southern ranked 27th nationally in total offense, averaging 359.9 yards per game.

Prior to his Georgia Southern stint, Hinshaw worked at Middle Tennessee State for five seasons. He was the running backs coach his first two seasons, and was elevated to co-offensive coordinator in February of 2003.

Under Hinshaw’s guidance, the MTSU offense consistently led the Sun Belt Conference (SBC) and ranked nationally throughout the years. In 2001, the Blue Raiders had two of the top five rushers in the SBC, along with the top overall rushing attack. Record-breaker Dwone Hicks, who rushed for over 1,000 yards, finished the year as the nation’s second-leading scorer. A year later, MTSU had the nation’s No. 21 ranked rushing offense, a 1,000-yard rusher and two of the top eight ground gainers in the Sun Belt Conference.

In 2003, the Blue Raider offense went down as the highest scoring unit in the league at 27.7 points a contest, including four games of 35 points or more. The unit ranked 37th nationally in passing efficiency and had the fifth-ranked receiver in the country.

In 2004, MTSU led the Sun Belt and ranked 15th nationally in passing, while ranking 31st in the country in passing efficiency.

Hinshaw, 37, made his way to Middle Tennessee after serving on Mike Kruczek’s staff at UCF from 1999 to 2000. A record-setting quarterback during his playing days for the Knights, Hinshaw spent the 1999 campaign as a graduate assistant with the responsibility of coaching tight ends and assisting the head coach with the quarterbacks.

In 2000, Hinshaw took over the quarterback coaching duties — the first time someone other than Kruczek guided the quarterbacks since 1985. In that first season, Ryan Schneider threw for 2,334 yards and 21 touchdowns and completed 62 percent of his passes.

As a player, Hinshaw set numerous school records for the Knights, including the career passing mark with 9,000 yards. During his time under center, UCF had a combined 28-16 record, including a 9-3 mark and an appearance in the I-AA playoffs in 1993.

Following his playing days at UCF, Hinshaw began a career in professional football. After a brief stint with the Cleveland Browns, Hinshaw spent two years with the Orlando Predators of the Arena Football League, helping the Preds to the Arena Bowl, where they lost to the Tampa Bay Storm in 1995.

In 1996, Hinshaw played quarterback and was the offensive coordinator for the Granite State Warriors of the Eastern Football League, which was made up of teams from New York and New England. Hinshaw inherited a team that went 2-8 in 1995 and led it to a 14-2 record and a trip to the national championship game.

Following a year in the EFL, Hinshaw went back to the Arena League to play for the Nashville Kats. After a short stay in Nashville, Hinshaw entered the college coaching ranks at UCF.

A 1993 graduate of UCF, Hinshaw was named in 2004 to UCF’s 25th Anniversary Team. He earned his master’s in business administration from UCF in 1996. He and his wife, Pam, have three daughters: Sydney, Hayley, and Carley; and a son, Darin Jr.
