Yesterday, in its editorial, ” Courage in Arizona , ” The New York Times praised the actions of four student activists who staged a sit-in at Senator McCain’s office, urging passage of the Dream Act. As we’ve already seen through the lessons of How Democracy Works Now , history is repeating itself. By chance, next week also happens to be the world premiere of Marking Up The Dream , a documentary film tracks the efforts of student activists, Senators and advocates on the Hill to pass the DREAM Act, a law crafted by Senators Dick Durbin and Orin Hatch that would provide a path to citizenship for undocumented youths who have displayed extraordinary academic performance and community involvement.

A fellow barista at Pam’s House Blend sent this to me via email.

It’s by Eugene Delgaudio, a? District Supervisor in Sterling, Virginia:

Our children…

They’ve been the Radical Homosexuals’ target all along.

Now they’re finally going after what they’ve always wanted.

Just a few weeks ago, radicals in Congress led by openly homosexual Representative Jared Polis introduced H.R. 4530.

It is a bill to turn America’s schools into indoctrination centers … its classrooms into social laboratories … its playgrounds into homosexual breeding grounds.

Of course, they’ve disguised the bill’s wicked nature behind the innocent name “The Student Non-Discrimination Act.”

Sound harmless, right? Well, that’s key to their scheme.

Honestly, I can hardly imagine a law more harmful.

More appropriately, this bill should be called “The Homosexual Classrooms Act.”

. . .You see, the Homosexual Classrooms Act contains a laundry list of anti-family provisions that will:

* Require schools to teach sodomy and other appalling homosexual acts so homosexual students don’t feel “singled out” during already explicit sex-ed classes;

* Spin impressionable students in a whirlwind of sexual confusion and misinformation, recruiting and even pressuring vulnerable teens and pre-teens into the homosexual “lifestyle”;

* Effectively outlaw voluntary prayer in schools, and expose students who pray privately to lawsuits and even criminal prosecution for “religious intimidation”;

* Exempt homosexual students from punishment for propositioning, harassing, or even sexually assaulting their classmates, as part of their specially-protected right to “freedom of self-expression”;

* Force parochial schools to secularize and purge any reference to religion because radicals claim it creates a “hostile learning environment” for homosexual students.

Simply put, The Homosexual Classrooms Act will use schools as weapons to eradicate traditional values in the next generation of American students.

Well damn.? Someone call Ernst Stavro Blofeld. Delgaudio certainly has our number, although it would probably serve him better to have the number of a local psychiatrist. The bill Delgaudio is all up in arms about is one that would simply curb school bullying. Nothing more. No “indoctrination centers.” No Clockwork Orange type torture techniques. No lesson plans on gay sex.

It’s just a bill to ensure the safety of America’s children, but apparently Delgaudio decided to forgo the truth for the time honored right-wing technique of lying through the teeth.

And it isn’t the first time he has scapegoated the lgbt community. At a January meeting, he called transgender men and women “freaky.”

And then there a portion of this recent fundraising letter, which further demonstrates that he doesn’t particularly like lgbts. It’s as if he took the most hysterical fears of all of the top religious right groups and combined them into one hot mess:

?. . .? the Radical Homosexuals are storming through Washington demanding passage of their agenda.

And with the passage of Thought Control last year, they say NOW is the time to push their perverse “life-style” on every man, women and child in America.

And they insist YOU actually support them.

The Homosexual Lobby played a major role in electing Obama and the majorities he enjoys in both houses of Congress.

I can only begin to imagine all the damage the Radical Homosexuals will do with their allies controlling the House of Representatives, the Senate and the White House.

As the President of Public Advocate of the U.S., I’ve devoted twenty-seven years to battling the radical homosexuals in Washington.

Backed by Hollywood celebrities, the media and millions of your tax dollars, the Radical Homosexuals have many Congressmen quivering with fear — and they have a Radical Homosexual-friendly majority in control of Congress.

That is why pro-family Senators and Congressmen are counting on me to find out if you really support the Gay Bill of Special Rights and homosexual marriage as the radical homosexuals claim.

Please click here to complete the American Morality survey and prove to Congress that Americans oppose homosexual marriage and the Gay Bill of Special Rights today.

Frankly if you really do support the radical Homosexual Agenda — or if you just no longer care enough to stand up for the family — insiders in Congress say the entire Homosexual Agenda could pass in a matter of months.

*** Special job rights for homosexuals and lesbians. Businesses may have to adopt hiring quotas to protect themselves from lawsuits. Every homosexual fired or not hired becomes a potential federal civil rights lawsuit.

Radical homosexuals will terrorize day care centers, hospitals, churches and private schools. Traditional moral values will be shattered by federal law.

*** Same-sex marriages and adoptions. Wedding-gown clad men smooching before some left-wing clergy or state official is just the beginning.

You’ll see men hand-in-hand skipping down to adoption centers to “pick out” a little boy for themselves.

*** Homosexual advocacy in schools. Your children or grandchildren will be taught homosexuality is moral, natural and good. High school children will learn perverted sex acts as part of “safe sex” education.

With condoms already handed out in many schools, Radical Homosexuals will have little trouble adopting today’s “if it feels good do it” sex-ed curriculum to their agenda.

And to add insult to injury, lobbyists for the Homosexual Agenda are paid off with your tax dollars!

That’s right, radical homosexual groups like the Gay-Lesbian Task Force and ACT-UP receive millions from the government.

?Now that letter was so hardcore that I hear Anita Bryant got angry over it.

Naturally in Delgaudio’s letters are solicitations for money.? And personally, I would happily give Delgaudio any funds he desires so long as he invests them in a good long stay at a local mental hospital.

I don’t know what disturbs me me more – Delgaudio’s blatant homophobia or the fact that someone was dumb enough to elect him to public office.

Interestingly enough, Delgaudio’s words are no different from what the lgbt community have heard from such so-called moral “leaders” like Andrea Lafferty, Matt Barber, and yes even Mike Huckabee.

The only difference is that Delgaudio decided to omit the “we love you but we hate what you do” lie in lieu of comparing us to the aliens who blew up the White House in Independence Day.

It certainly doesn’t make his homophobic comments sound any better but it’s nice to know exactly where we stand with Delgaudio.

Even if it is in a pool of quicksand.

“I would like to thank Freddie for his hard work and service to Rutgers,” Scarlet Knights athletic director Tim Pernetti said. “We appreciate his efforts on the behalf of our student-athletes and wish him the very best in his future endeavors.”

Hill’s future at Rutgers was considered basically over following his conduct at a couple of Rutgers’ baseball games on April 1 and 3. Sources told FanHouse that Hill initially was offered a $600,000 buyout, but he turned it down. Hill would have received $1.8 million if he had remained the final three years of his contract.

As poorly as Hill did in four seasons at Rutgers, it wasn’t his 47-77 coaching record that led to Hill’s dismissal. It was a profanity-laced verbal outburst on April Fool’s Day at a Rutgers baseball game.

On April 1, Hill attended the Rutgers-Pittsburgh baseball game — his father Fred Hill Sr. is RU’s coach. After the game, Hill was involved in a profanity-laced verbal outburst with Pittsburgh baseball coach Joe Jordano and Jordano’s staff, MyCentralJersey.com reported.

Pernetti issued a statement a few days later about the incident, saying the school was investigating what occurred. The school announced Monday the investigation was now closed.

I am a native of Mississippi.

I am a native of Mississippi. I was born and raised on the Gulf Coast in a relatively small town named after the moss that dangles — at least before disease struck — from magnolia trees. And this quaint and complicated place, no matter how far I go or run, remains the cornerstone of who I am. I left home early: running from my father and from the burden of a state that carries on its shoulders the burdens of a nation. Of course, both continually haunt.

As you can imagine, I was particularly struck by Haley Barbour’s comments about the controversy over Confederate History Month and slavery. Not so much because he failed to exhibit the requisite moral sensitivity towards African Americans. It is not enough to say that slavery was obviously wrong. Too much blood and death resides there; Barbour’s words, intended or not, were offensive.

For me, the fact that he is the Governor of Mississippi, a place where the revenant of our racist past lives alongside the failures of our present, matters deeply. How could he blaspheme? Of all Americans, Mississippians should know better — even if they don’t act better.

But Barbour’s remarks reveal how a kind of easy forgetfulness (or, worse, a deliberate erasure) can free one from the burdens and responsibilities of the past and sanction callousness towards the dead and living that walk in your backyard. Mississippi has always been a metaphor for America. And it remains so today (even with a black man in the White House). Statistically how do African Americans in my state fare in terms of poverty, health care, education, and incarceration? What does it mean that in 2010 the court ordered the Walthall School district to desegregate? And why isn’t Barbour, who dares to describe himself as “a fat redneck with an accent,” asked to give an account as he rails repeatedly against the health care bill? Every time I hear him these days I find myself mumbling Nina’s words: “Mississippi Goddamn.”

April 21st marks the seventh anniversary of Nina Simone’s death. Hers was a voice that challenged us in so many ways. I have always loved her ironic use of the show tune to call attention to the murders of Medgar Evers in Mississippi and the four little children in Birmingham, Alabama.

Alabama’s gotten me so upset
Tennessee made me lose my rest
And everybody knows about Mississippi Goddamn

Mississippi and its violence function in the song as common sense; its horrors are known and its failures are deeply felt. And as Nina calls attention to the contradictions and the hypocrisy, as she demands equality for herself and black people, Mississippi stands in for America as such. Her words rest alongside the actions of those young people who dared fifty years ago this month to organize the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and later in April of 1964 found the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party to challenge the brutality of American racism.

Barbour’s words occasion an opportunity to lift up their sacrifice and courage — to remember their resolve to suffer the evils of men and women in pursuit of justice.

I have long since reconciled myself to my birthplace. My Southern accent has somewhat diminished (except when I talk with my mother), but Mississippi remains in my blood stream. It is, after all, my inheritance. The memory of its blood soaked soil allows me to embrace, with some depth of feeling, this most complicated of American places — to possess, even if he could not imagine them in my hands, William Faulkner’s words: “That man will not merely endure: he will prevail. He is immortal, not because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance.”

Barbour’s words, however, ring shallow. No repentance resides therein. Luke 13:5 comes to mind: “unless you repent, you too will all perish.”

Much more is required of Americans if we are to step into the future that awaits. We must not turn our backs on the past or fall silent before its torment. We must look it squarely in the face in order to be released, if just for a moment, from its tyranny. Those who live in the South, especially in Mississippi, should lead the way. But, for now, too many Southern voices spout a kind of forgetfulness that can only harden the soul and seal our fate. Mississippi Goddamn!

This week, the University of Southern California announced a first-of-its-kind Diploma in Innovation Program for Ph.D. students. It’s a highly selective, 12-unit course of study within the USC Graduate School designed to complement the students’ disciplinary training with practical skills and creative perspectives to help them make maximum impact with their ideas.

Our doctoral students, like doctoral students everywhere, aim to gain deep understanding and create new scholarship in their own fields. The diploma’s coursework will help candidates expand and re-envision their role, in the broader innovation ecosystem, beyond their immediate specialties in academia. It also provides the background in practical matters of business and innovation they need to translate their expertise into valuable solutions for global problems.

It’s hardly uncommon for USC doctoral students to go on to make important contributions beyond their academic work. In fact, our students bring that desire when they get to USC. Our annual Student Innovator Showcase is filled with novel ideas for solving critical world problems, like a new model for carbon offsetting developed by a graduate student from the School of Policy, Planning, and Development to address global climate change. Or a DNA sequencing technology concept, presented by a molecular genetics student from our Keck School of Medicine, that could possibly find the link between mutations and human diseases 50 times more effectively than the current state of the art.

In a sense, the USC Ph.D. candidates who have already trod the difficult and unfamiliar path of innovation outside academia are the inspiration for the Diploma in Innovation. We realized we could make this path more efficient for our students if we were to provide them with tools specific to innovation, business, entrepreneurship, and the like.

None of this is to suggest that Ph.D. students don’t make an impact through their scholarship and teaching in the university; that has always been and remains the primary role of the academy. But we should never miss an opportunity to broaden the impact of our major research universities, and expand our ability to produce great intellectual resources for the global community we share.

Seriously long ago — in 1970 — I reviewed Feelgood: A trip in time and out for the Boston Globe. I can’t tell what knocked me out more, this astonishing novel about a young man who dropped out of Harvard to go South and work in the civil rights movement or the author, Peter de Lissovoy, who had the guts to drop out of Harvard, go South and risk his life working for civil rights. A blazing talent, a home run of a debut — then de Lissovoy disappeared.

And now he’s back. Stephen L. Saltonstall, my college roommate and literary co-conspirator, sent me his review of a new book that Peter edited and then self-published in an edition of 500 copies. It sounds like another stunner — an important chapter in American history, lovingly told.

All books are special, shards of a writer’s life and times. A Peter de Lissovoy book set in the South in the 1960s is all that, and something more — he seems to be able to write only about big, bold characters playing for the highest stakes. But let me get out of the way, so Stephen can present Peter’s first book in four decades.

Despite our own self-important rhetoric, the dream of criminal law as the engine of what we once naively referred to as “social change” is largely dead. Today the craft of criminal defense is at its best a finger-in-the-dike operation, helping individuals but rarely making a larger societal dent. At worst, defense lawyers have become mere systemic conveniences that help the government’s trains run on time.

This was not always so. In “The Great Pool Jump”, criminal defense stalwart Dennis Roberts, who now practices in Oakland, California, tells of his time in the civil rights movement and his internship with C.B. King, one of America’s greatest lawyers-that-you-have-never-heard-of. In 1963, King was the only black attorney in southwest Georgia, and one of only three in the entire state. Roberts, a student at Boalt Hall and an activist in the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), was chosen from a pool of more than 100 applicants to work for King.

Roberts’ arrival at King’s office in Albany, Georgia was less than auspicious. The stairway leading to King’s office reeked of urine. And when King’s secretary first laid eyes on Roberts, who had a deep tan and “Jewfro,” she remarked to her boss, “Damn, C.B., I told you he was a white boy!”

King was the only lawyer around with the inclination and the sheer guts to defend the civil rights workers who were trying to register voters and integrate public accommodations. This was dangerous work. One evening, when King had the temerity to visit a client in a local jail, the Sheriff hit him over the head with his cane, breaking the cane and covering King with his own blood. When asked why he had done this, the Sheriff replied, “Because he is a nigger and I am a white man.”

The Georgia legal establishment was predictably hostile to this “uppity” black lawyer, who had been admitted to practice only because the bar exam grading was anonymous and the powers-that-be couldn’t tell — and wouldn’t have been able to believe — that the person with the highest score in the state was black. The “cracker” judges went ballistic at the very sight of King entering the courtroom, dressed to the nines in a silk suit and carrying a fancy leather legal folder, followed by Roberts, the subservient white law clerk, weighed down by a mountain of law books.

And yet King managed, through guile, humor, and a superior intelligence, to be extraordinarily effective. One of King’s favorite ploys was to preface his legal arguments with a solemn but faux tip-of-the-hat to a make-believe Confederate hero. Roberts quotes a sample of this inspired double-talk as follows: “As Beauregard Bucknellington Wellington, III, a famous Confederate who liberated the City of Dogpatch, Georgia once said: ‘No matter how we might personally feel about Nigras, our constitution requires that all be treated equally and this, most unfortunately, includes Nigras….’”

He would describe white residents of the deep South as “The Denizens of that Republic so Dear to the Hearts of Every True Southern Patriot, the Most Noble Jurisdiction of [plug in the name of a state].” Professor Irwin Corey couldn’t have done better. But according to Roberts, the white knights of Georgia’s apartheid justice system ate up this kind of stuff, even though it was so hard for him to refrain from laughing that “There was more than one time when I left the courtroom, the insides of my cheek or tongue bleeding.”

King was also a master of the lost art of exploratory cross-examination. In a rape case, where the black defendant had allegedly used a knife to hold his white victim at bay, King asked the complaining witness what the accused had done with the knife while he was taking off his clothes. The witness replied, “I held it for him.” Case dismissed. In another case, King was able to establish during a dramatic and embarrassing (for the prosecution) cross that a white racist witness was illiterate and had lied when he swore in the jurat of his affidavit that had read it and that its contents were true.

Roberts, the pupil, went on to defend movement figures like the Black Panther Party luminaries Angela Davis and Huey P. Newton, and he was on the defense team of the Chicago Eight, which included Bobby Seale and Abbie Hoffman, who were charged with conspiracy to violate the draft laws during the Vietnam war. But Roberts told me that working with C.B. King was the most rewarding period of his professional life, and his vivid accounts of his time with C.B. King make clear why.

“The Great Pool Jump”also contains reminiscences by the non-lawyer foot-soldiers of SNCC, primarily teenagers and college drop-outs, both black and white. These accounts, by Peter de Lissovoy, who left Harvard to join the Albany movement, and Randy Battle, who was a gang member in Albany before joining SNCC, evoke beautifully the panoply of emotions experienced by those activists of the time. Fear was the common denominator, because violence against civil rights workers was always a possibility and often a reality. But there was also friendship, stirring music, good humor, and the sheer joy of sharing a righteous cause, even during hunger strikes in filthy Georgia jail cells.

One of the sick tactics used by city fathers in the South was to turn municipal swimming pools, built with public funds, into private “clubs,” to keep black people out. It seems crazy now, but many whites truly believed that if the races mixed in this fashion the whites would catch loathsome diseases or see their pure flowers of southern womanhood knocked up by black “bucks.” So these pools became battlegrounds for SNCC in the early ’60s. The authorities in Cairo, Illinois, where I was a SNCC volunteer in 1962, ultimately filled the municipal pool with cement rather than integrate it.

In Albany, Georgia, the city had sold the public pool to a racist newspaper publisher to keep it segregated. For one shining moment, though, the Albany facility was integrated. Randy Battle and two other black kids evaded the cops, climbed the fence, dove into the pool, swam across it, and ran out the unguarded exit — the “great pool jump.” According to Battle, the white customers were so anxious to avoid the “contaminated” water that they “hit the air like dolphins,” jumping out of the pool to safety. The white folks in charge had the pool drained, and every inch of it scrubbed with brushes, which took three days. The pool jump was a victory that electrified the kids in Albany’s black community, and they joined the movement in droves.

– Guest Butler Stephen L. Saltonstall practices law in Manchester Center, Vermont.

Five hundred copies of “The Great Pool Jump” have been published to commemorate SNCC’s 50th anniversary. It’s available only by mail for $25.00, plus $4.00 postage, from Peter de Lissovoy at YouArePerfect Press, 5 Lost Nation Road, Lancaster, N.H. 03584-3434.You can write Peter at pdel@surfglobal.net.

ISLAMABAD: A flurry of intelligence reports generated during the recent weeks put Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry at risk of being embarrassed by miscreants allegedly paid by the government.

Editor Investigation Ansar Abbasi in his report stated that although authenticity and credibility of such intelligence reports remain in question, some of these reports are really interesting. One such report talks of a government move to organise pro-president and anti-chief justice demonstrations.

Another report talks of a possible assault on the chief justice inside his Court No 1 or even outside to embarrass him. Another report generated by the National Crisis Management Cell (NCMC) of the interior ministry last month, which warned officials concerned in Islamabad about a “Conspiracy against the government”, said The News/Jang Group was likely to plant a story about the government’s plan to embarrass the chief justice.

The NCMC report, which has as its subject “Conspiracy against the government”, was circulated on January 28 and reads: “A reliable source has revealed Jang/News group is likely to plant a story that the government has planned to embarrass the chief justice of Pakistan. For the purpose some lawyer(s) may physically attack/slap and/or abuse Mr Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry in Court No 1.

“This story would be floated in journalist circles and likely to be published by the Jang/News group (most likely in a day or two). This exercise is aimed at creating and accentuating an atmosphere of distrust and hostility between the government and the judiciary. “2. The government should pre-empt such a move, asking authorities in the information ministry for the needful.”

The NCMC report was dated January 28, the day when the crime reporter of The News Shakeel Anjum, while quoting an intelligence report, reported a government-sponsored group of miscreant lawyers was preparing to create disorder and chaos in Court Room No 1 presided over by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry during proceedings on any contempt of court case.

“The objective behind the ‘plan’ is to cause embarrassment to the chief justice and show defiance to the apex court decisions, The News has learnt on good authority,” the report said.

The News report said the intelligence report was submitted to the interior ministry. The News report added: “The interior ministry has issued orders to take ‘stringent’ preventive measures to foil any such bid inside the Court Room No 1, which, if happened, will only trigger yet another conflict between the government and the judiciary, which already have strained relations in the wake of the apex court verdict on the NRO.”

According to Shakeel Anjum, a day before the story was published, i.e., January 27, he had talked to a top police official of the Islamabad Capital Administration, who had confirmed the receipt of the intelligence report and had also revealed he already had a meeting with the interior minister on the subject. There was no mention of any conspiracy against the government or the involvement of the Jang Group in such a “conspiracy”.

However, a day later, the NCMC circulated the report about the “conspiracy against the government”. According to another intelligence report on February 14, 2010, a central woman leader of the PPP met two ex-student leaders of the Quaid-i-Azam University belonging to the PSF, the student wing of the PPP, in the parliament loges and were assigned the task of coordinating with students of educational institutions and universities in Islamabad to arrange student protests in favour of the president and against the chief justice.

The report alleged the student leaders were also paid Rs0.5 million for the job. The names and mobile numbers of the two students were also given in the report.

When approached by The News, the students admitted to have organised such demonstrations but denied to have received money or had done so on the direction of any of their central leader. One of these students said that it was their own decision to hold a demonstration in support of the political mandate given to the president by the people of Pakistan.

Meanwhile, an Islamabad police source confided to The News some top police officials of the ICT were invited by a powerful minister recently at his residence and it was suggested to them to put men of special branch in the CJP’s squad. The source alleged it was suggested to facilitate some sponsored people to create embarrassing scenes for the chief justice in public places or in the courtroom.

He’s created some of the most memorable characters in the history of film: An intergalactic smuggler . . . an adventurous archeologist . . . and a hands-on president.

So Harrison Ford understands a good story, like the one about the Chicago boy who grows up to be a movie star . . . and goes back to his old stomping grounds with his best boyhood buddy.

Ford’s mom was a homemaker, his dad an advertising executive. Neither Ford, nor Bob Blattberg, now a marketing professor, had any idea what life had in store for them when they lived there in the 1940s.

This was my 4th time going down there so the natives consider me a Bahamian now. During the cold season, nothing beats spending a few days in paradise so I always look forward to their warm climate and friendly staff at the Atlantis resort. This is my third wedding that I got to photograph here. Joe & Jina got married here in October 2007 (their wedding was featured in the Destination Weddings & Honeymoon publication) and Jason & Riley had their beautiful wedding in December 2008.
