It’s hard not to look at the black gold seeping across the Gulf of Mexico as an allegory of the sinking, gruesome Republican Party, in Texas and across the United States.

As Sarah Palin arrived in Austin, no doubt ready to rant against the socialists who are now tasked with cleaning up the oil spill, Florida’s Governor split from the Republican Party after they snuffed out any last vestiges of moderation, principles sinking under the weight of the Tea Partier’s rabid outcries.

We have elected officials in Texas who think that Obama’s presidency is God punishing us, and SBOE members who want to remove Thomas Jefferson from the pages of history for political payback. Their own history, being written as we speak, will remember them as the bigots who continued to see only in color when the rest of the world had learned to love the goodness of the human soul.

And our fearless Governor, who perches in a $9000 a month rental property, sees coyotes in the same light as he sees the inmates on death row; a general disregard for any life other than that which might be growing in a woman’s uterus.

Here we sit in Texas, burning the oil to save our beaches, to stop the ecological bleeding that comes from our selfishness and our haste to pull every last cent out of Mother Earth before we kill her off. We watch the Gulf burn and make a daily trade on our nation’s equity more gruesome than those stated income loans doled out with a greedy grin by Goldman Sachs.

And after all that, at the end of the day, all we’re left with is a dead coyote.

Maryline Blackburn, a Democrat, qualified Thursday for the House District 34 election in the Atlanta suburb of Smyrna. She hopes to challenge incumbent Rep. Rich Golick, a Republican.

Blackburn won Miss Alaska in 1984, beating Palin, who was second runner-up. Blackburn is a recording artist who has been nominated twice for a Grammy.

Georgia’s primary is July 20, and the general election is Nov. 2.

Over the past week, Sarah Palin encouraged Tea-Party candidates to make energy issues a central part of their campaigns. “There’s nothing stopping us from achieving energy independence that a good old national election can’t fix,” she said.

Palin’s full of surprises, but this piece of campaign advice caught me off-guard. After all, a recent poll found that energy is the issue that inspires the most faith in Democratic lawmakers. Since President Obama made clean energy a central part of their campaign in 2008, this poll suggests that this is what the majority of people want. Therefore, Democrats AND Republicans should all be running on clean energy.

Tea-partiers are always more than welcome to pontificate &peddle” more of the same”, blathering about dirty, old energy technologies that date back to the 19th century.

When in fact it will be bold Republicans and smart Democrats that support clean, innovative, job generating “energy ideas” that will truly get a lift by campaigning on energy.

Eight years of “Drill, baby, Drill,” during the Bush administration got us exactly where we are now – in trouble and dependent on foreign oil. But that isn’t what the American voters want now. American voters want progress and they want jobs. The clean energy plan at the center of the economic package, which just approved a $100 million investment in smart grid technology, will lead to 30,000 Americans getting new job training.

These are the energy policies that Americans will have the most faith in. And that’s why I encourage the undecided Senators out there–those lawmakers and candidates from both parties who have been quiet about clean energy and climate legislation–to step forward and declare their support for a clean energy future for America and show some leadership.

Rather than being scared about what the Tea Party will say in response, lawmakers should be listening to American voters. People want to see progress right now, not more Congressional gridlock.

Comprehensive clean energy and climate legislation is primed for passing. It has already passed in the House. A new Senate bill is expected to become public in the coming days and will have tri-partisan support in the Senate thanks to Senators Kerry (D), Graham (R), and Lieberman (I). After the bill is unveiled, negotiating will begin in earnest. Forward movement is further propelled by the White House backing, thanks to President Obama’s repeated requests for a bill to be delivered to his desk. And it has already gone through numerous hearings and been thoroughly debated on the Hill.

Senators should pass a clean energy and climate bill this summer and head into the final campaign push with a real success in hand–an action plan to deliver on the three of the most pressing issues for American voters right now:

â?¢ Jobs: The clean energy and climate bill that passed the House last just is projected to create nearly 2 million jobs. In fact, for every $1 million invested in clean energy, we can create 3 to 4 times as many jobs as if we spent the same amount on fossil fuels.

â?¢ The Economy: There is a consensus among economists that America can prevent the worst impacts of climate change without hurting the economy. As Paul Krugman explained recently, the House bill would leave the American economy between 1.1 percent and 3.4 percent smaller in 2050 than it would be otherwise.

â?¢ National Security: This week, the U.S. Military http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2010/apr/11/peak-oil-production-supply that oil would be in dangerously short supply in the next few years, exacerbating political tensions and around the world. In contrast, Think Progress found that clean energy and climate legislation would reduce Iran’s petrodollar receipts by $1.8 trillion through 2050. That’s an average of $100 million per day that doesn’t fall into the hands of a regime that sponsors extremist groups around the world!

These are the kind of real numbers that Americans are looking for. That’s why those up for reelection this fall should run on a positive, forward-looking energy policy instead of the 19th century leftover rhetoric that Palin is dishing out.

The Tea Party movement mocks educated reactions to its ire, so I’d like to start with a folksy observation. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it’s probably a duck. That duck can insist that it’s something else — say a patriotic, bald eagle — but it’s still web-footed waterfowl. In exactly the same way, the Tea Party movement claims to be something that it isn’t.

1. Not A Tax Revolt. Federal taxes have not been lower at any time in the past fifty years; 47% of Americans don’t pay any federal taxes at all. No one likes taxation, but it has been many generations since anyone has had less reason to complain.

2. Not Opposed Big Government. The Tea Party movement generally favors Social Security, Medicare and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The first two are positively socialist, and supporting nation building does not qualify as libertarian. Big government is fine when it works for them.

3. Not Inclusive. According to a New York Times/CBS Poll released last week, “…Tea Party supporters tend to be Republican, white, male, married and older than 45…” 90% of those polled think that Obama is a socialist; nearly one in five believe that he was not born in the US. Many also think that he’s a cryto-Muslim. And the movement’s ‘ideological’ leaders — e.g., Anne Coulter, Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachmann, Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck — all share a very pale skin color, as well as a incoherent demagoguery.

Rhetoric aside, the real purpose of the Tea Party movement is clear: prevent the sort of change that might threaten the privileges traditionally enjoyed by middle aged, white Republicans. These are the people who feel that the ‘real’ America is under assault by the poor, people of color, gay Americans and all immigrants. They wrap themselves in the rhetoric of tradition, democracy and tradition, but they are just elites trying to find an acceptable language with which to defend their fear and self interest.

Unfortunately, “Securing Our Self Interest At Your Expense,” isn’t much of a campaign slogan. And so, we talk about Tea Parties instead.

Without a hint of awareness of any contradiction, the Tea Party Express and headliner Sarah Palin recently gathered on the Boston Common, one of the oldest government-maintained spaces in America – to denounce government.

They vented anger about a government doing too much. A strange complaint from self-styled patriots, given the crises this Nation is still facing:

Two wars. Foreclosures rampant. Unemployment spiked to nearly 10%. Millions more underemployed. Small business owners afraid to invest more. Small banks failing, and large banks consolidating power. And much of it flowing from the embrace-the-free-market policies of the conservative coalition in charge since 2000, while many Tea Partyers were apparently tranquil.

So what does a grass roots movement which claims the mantle of the Revolutionary builders of our country have to say about solutions? Do nothing!

No, worse yet: undo whatever change has begun to bring the economy back to health: Stop investing in jobs. Stop investing in education. Stop providing help to those who have become victims of one of the greatest financial thefts in American history. And most of all, let those without health insurance go bankrupt.

Why? Because helping the country requires asking them to sacrifice something personally. And from their rhetoric, Tea Party activists apparently don’t believe in sacrifice for the common good.

Not so the real, original Boston tea party patriots. They took personal risks to secure liberty, but they also launched independence by declaring “we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.”

There is little praise for mutual pledging in today’s Tea Party movement. Instead of seeing America as a nation that is in this together, they choose to rail against infringements upon their personal right to be indifferent to the suffering of others.

Already on average better off than most Americans, they have constructed a wonderfully self-serving vision of America where government programs that benefit them equate with freedom, but anything that benefits others is tyranny. Hands off their Medicare!

Tea Party pretenders also claim to revere the Constitution above all else. Under our Constitution, we hold free and fair presidential elections every four years. No serious person disputes that Barack Obama won the last election by a large margin, and voters gave Democrats large majorities in Congress. Yet do they respect this mandate of the people?

No. From Inauguration Day on, they have disrespected the President. And in doing so they have disrespected tens of millions of citizens who voted for him, and the very basis of a democracy – that elections matter.

So it is no surprise that the keynote speaker at a Tea Party convention says, to applause: “people who could not even spell the word ‘vote’, or say it in English, put a committed socialist ideologue in the White House.” Words of respect for democracy, or the whine of a sore loser?

At bottom, the Tea Party leaders seems to speak themes better suited to those who in reality want a “me” party. No “ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country” socialist nonsense for them. Far better to dress up your rejection of responsibility to your fellow Americans in language of patriotism and righteous outrage.

Yearn as they might, however, theirs is not a movement that harkens back to the Founding Fathers. It is a movement espousing self-interest, denial of liberties to others, and a good side to greed.

That’s not what Sam Adams and company stood up for when they denounced taxation without representation. Modern-day Tea Partyers seem instead to be fighting for representation without responsibility.

NEW ORLEANS — Mitt Romney didn’t attend the Southern Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans, but still got a boost from those at the conference.

The former Massachusetts governor won a test vote of likely 2012 presidential candidates – by one vote. He got 439.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul came in second with 438 votes, followed by Sarah Palin with 330 and Newt Gingrich with 321.

The results mean little to nothing. Conference staffers put names on the ballot of people they thought were likely to run, and many Republicans considering a bid were left off the list.

Also on the ballot: Mike Huckabee, Tim Pawlenty, Mike Pence, Rick Santorum and Gary Johnson.

Over the three-day conference, 1,806 ballots were cast.

I don’t know the route of flight, but tail number H/B748/R is set to return to Paine four hours later at 2:12 P.M.
