Christina Hendricks says she’s always been proud of her curvier figure. Mad Men beauty Christina Hendricks has revealed that the body she admires the most is The Killer Inside Me star Jessica Alba’s.Christina Hendricks, appears on the artsy-craftsy commerce site modeling a friend’s handmade scarf.

Hendricks wears a Shibori-style felted scarf in green, orange, and gold for the etsy shop of friend Tamara Mello. The scarf runs for $130, but the description notes, “This piece is a one of a kind original and will not be duplicated.” We’re not sure what we think of the scarf, but Hendricks sure looks good.

Christina Hendricks talked about her beautiful figure in an interview for the July to August issue of a magazine. Hendricks stated to Health Mag that she was greatly inspired by her mother. Furthermore, she said that her mother was very proud of her body and she never complained about her figure.

Latest News Updates About Diane Downs Children Now Diane Downs, Small Sacrifices : Rebecca Babcock is on of the children of Diane Downs and she spoke on 20/20 on their Friday May 15, 2010 edition at 10 pm. Diane Downs was from Oregon and she was accused and then convicted of shooting her own children. The shooting of her children resulted in the death of one child, while seriously injuring the other two children back in 1983.

Diane Downs trial actually occurred in 1984. Oddly enough, while the shooting occurred Downs was pregnant with child. Her daughter was born only 10 days before her sentencing. The daughter of Diane Downs is Rebecca Babcock who was adopted and raised up just 100 miles away from her mother in prison.

Babcock has chosen to share her story about “being the seed of a monster and how that legacy has shaped her life.” Knowing that your mother was shooting your family members while you were in her womb must be mind boggling and unsettling in your spirit. Bless her heart.

Rebecca Babcock seems to have turned out wonderful. I am glad people chose to adopt Rebecca Babcock and make her part of their family. Her life could have turned out so incredibly differently. I am still left wondering what happened to Diane Downs Children and what they look like now and how their lives turned out?

Sunday I’ll be at my parent’s house for lunch celebrating Mother’s Day. My husband, my brother and sister in law and their daughter will be there too. My mother will be running from the kitchen to the living room serving us. First, she’ll bring out the mini Spinach pies we all love. Then she’ll dart back into the kitchen to warm something up or toast something.

She’ll seem merely slavish while we’re all enjoying ourselves – a brilliant cover for her decades of abuse.

We’ll all move to the dining table that she will have craftily laden with piles of smoked salmon, turkey and chopped liver, my particular favorites, and an abundance of Mediterranean delicacies like artichokes, feta cheese, marinated peppers and olives. We’ll raise a glass of Pinot Noir or Pinot Grigio, whichever I chose, and we’ll toast this woman who abused me over and over again.

It started when I was 18 years old. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I blamed my father, whose parents both had type 2 diabetes. After all, I’d always heard diabetes is genetic and it skips generations. But in truth it was my mother who gave me diabetes. Type 1 is an auto-immune condition, just like the Hashimoto’s syndrome my mother has. Which incidentally she gave me thirty years later.

Never mind that my mother was so frightened for me when I got diabetes that she didn’t tell me until I was in my fifties that my father’s mother died of a diabetes-related heart attack just weeks before scheduled for a diabetes-caused leg amputation. No, my mean, mean mother never told me that! Her story is she was trying to protect me. Hah!

Never mind that when I was in my twenties and quit my advertising job to find myself, my mother convinced my father to stop badgering me; every time he saw me he begged me to find a job or go back to school. No, my mother made normal my four years of scribbling little drawings and calling myself a “greeting card artist.” My dog-walking and post-office running for a famous author. My hoisting cases of beer and fixing Margaritas at a local pub and calling myself a “mixologist.” Never mind the love, support, and checks she deliberately extended to confuse me and throw me off her trail.

When I moved to Japan at the age of 32 my mother cried. Sure, she was losing her little pawn! To try and reign me in she came all the way to Tokyo – without my father. That’s how sneaky she was. Naturally she planned to capture me and bring me home when no one was looking. Surely that’s why this non-traveller put herself aboard a plane, flew 13 hours, suffered fatiguing jet lag and wandered around a place where she couldn’t read or speak while I was working. But her plan was aborted: She fell in love with my friends and the courtesy of the country.

Returning from Japan six years later I went through a two-year reactive depression. Ex-pats prefer to call it “reverse culture shock.” What did my mother do? She took me into the comfort of my parent’s home, cooked my favorite meals, did my laundry and asked nothing of me. Stockholm syndrome set in – I began to fall in love with my captors. Fearing my mother’s unconditional love, I left again. I flew to Sydney where I spent a year trying to put my Pan-Asian-boots back on. They no longer fit, and I returned once again to the house of my captors. My mother took me in, only smiling to see me.

Lulled into a false sense of security, my mother’s abuse came again four years ago when I was 52 years old. She gave me tinnitus! One day sitting quietly in my living room chair I noticed there was no noise around me, but there was a steady buzzing in my ears. I couldn’t hear myself think. I could no longer meditate and fall into that delicious silence. Days followed that I wanted to throw my head out the window. The only thing that stopped me was knowing that my body would have to go too. My mother got tinnitus at 52. I didn’t know that until I got it. She is covert, my mother. She never complained of it. I hardly know how she didn’t.

She insisted on paying for me to see a renown tinnitus specialist who was on the cutting edge of a cure. Guilt-money to keep me quiet. I went, of course. Every few days she’d call me to see if the treatment helped. Just insurance to see that her hush money was doing its job.

I’m waiting now with trepidation for what she yet has planned. She’s still got osteoporosis, migraines and arthritis up her sleeve. And one day soon, her having a shelf-full of my favorite low-carb pasta for me to take home and her calling to see how my toe injury is coming along, won’t be enough to equal out her ongoing terrorizing. Here I am at 56 years old and she still tells me to wear a hat when it’s cold and take an umbrella if there’s a hint of rain. She asks regularly about my friends and professes to adore my husband. Her abuse is artful, I’ll give her that.

Of course, when she’s no longer here to abuse me, that will be the greatest abuse of all. Her fini accompli. I’ll miss her so much I won’t be able to stand it. And she’ll have the last laugh – abuse from the grave!

I wasn’t thinking about losing my mother when I started the blog My Mom the Style Icon. I was thinking about how NOT to let her know I’ve posted her pictures on the internet.

Last year, after digging up a mysterious album from my mother’s travels abroad in 1968, I was mesmerized by her outfits. Let me just free-associate here: arm cuffs, hair falls, stove-top jeans, mini-mod dresses. The lady had style. And not the kind I knew her to have–that’s to say perfume-scarves, and heels that make clickety clackety mom sounds on tile.

So I scanned in the photos and threw it online for proof that the woman I’d battled with in dressing rooms for years was actually my new muse.

Over the past year, the blog My Mom The Style Icon and it’s original intention have changed quite a bit. With thousands of submissions -from as far away as Australia, Russia and Croatia–other people’s mother’s have taken over the site. Many of the moms are deceased.

The site, at times, morphs into a tribute page, dedicated to the memory of mothers–before they were mothers. Yes it’s about style. But the pictures, are more than great pictures. They offer an intimate look at the lifespan of a stranger. Not the harrowing loss, but the life lived–it’s the kind of public treatment of death most often reserved for celebrities.

These are women who engaged in rebellion, craved a hat they couldn’t afford at a local boutique, fell out of love and back in love, worried what their parents would think of their boyfriend–all this before they had their children. And for a moment, they become superstars. The kind
of person you hope to be like.

Humankind in its infancy clung to the primal comprehension of a maternal Earth, in the same way that any completely dependent child hangs onto her mother’s hip. The reality of our utter reliance incontrovertible, we held on for dear life. Until only five, six thousand years ago, the archetypal Great Mother, She Who Birthed the Earth, creatrix of all existence, matriarch of the races of god/desses, reigned supreme everywhere. Homer sang Her praises: “I shall sing of Gaia, Universal Mother, firmly founded, Oldest of all the Holy Ones.” Foremost in all early religions, the Earth was personified and identified in many ways, but She was universally regarded with reverence and deference as a living mother.

Many creation myths describe how Earth was made from Her sacred body. According to the Apaches, all creatures came from the Earth: “Just like a child being born from its mother. The place of emergence is the womb of the Earth.” Asintmah, the first woman of the Athapascan peoples of Western Canada and Alaska, was midwife to Mother Earth. She wove Her a great blanket of Earth to use during Her confinement and laid it carefully across Her body. She then reached under this birthing blanket and pulled out a mouse, and then a rabbit, and then, one by one, She brought forth each of the Earth’s vast multitude from the loins of the Great Mother.

Earth is often seen as an island floating in the vast sea, very much as an embryo is suspended in the womb. Falling Woman, the ancestress of the Iroquoian tribes of the North Eastern portion of North America, was said to have tumbled out of the watery sky into the waters below. Otter, beaver, muskrat and sea bird pulled soil up from under the water to create a mound to soften Her fall and to serve as a solid, dry place between the liquid sky and the wet depths for Her to stand upon. The body of the Sumerian-Babylonian Earth Mother, Tiamat, also defined the division between the watery realms above and below, like a horizon differentiates the heaven from the deep blue sea. Her title, Dia Mater, “Goddess Mother,” gives us the word, “diameter,” the dividing line which stretches across the center of a circle.

Other myths relate how clay, the flesh of the fertile Earth, is shaped by the Goddess into living beings of skin and bone and breath, of blood and brain and flesh. Another version of the Iroquois creation story is that in which the Great Turtle tosses the mud off of Her back to create the Earth and all that lives on Her. As She shimmies, shakes and shrugs, each clod creates a different species of creature. The Shake Dance is still danced by women in ceremony and at pow wow gatherings. It is a deliciously, sinuous rendering of the subterranean rhythms of that great grandmother terrapin and a sensuous celebration of the great landmass which She created, Turtle Island.

The Shilluk people of the Sudan tell of the divine Juok who fashioned people from Earth. The white people were made from white loam and the Arabs were made of brownish soil. The black people were made of the finest and best Earth, which is the fertile black clay from the banks of the Nile. The Ewe of Togo say that good people are created from good clay and bad people are made out of stinking mud. The creator of the Dogon of Mali is Amma, who created the sun and moon out of clay pots decorated with copper and brass, and then created the Earth from clay in the shape of a reclining female figure. Her head faces north, Her feet, south. Her mons veneris is an anthill, and her clitoris is a termite hill.

The Mesopotamian Goddess, Aramaiti, was known as Mother of the People Made of Clay. Aruru was the potter who not only fashioned figures from clay, but also breathed into them the animating energy of the universe. The Assyrian Goddess, Mami, Mother, formed the first seven pairs of people, the original male and female fashioned from clay. The Sumerian, Ninhursay, created the human race from a mixture of clay from Her own body and Her menstrual blood. This clay-converted-into-flesh myth cycle eventually culminated in the ass-backward biblical tale of God creating Adam from clay and then creating Eve from out of Adam’s body.

The biblical name, Eve, means Mother of All Living. Her name is derived from those of much older Earth Mothers. In India, she was known as Jiva or Ieva, The Creatress of All Manifested Forms. A Tantric appellation was Adita Eva, The Very Beginning. The Hittites knew Her as Hawwah, Life, the Persians called her Hvov, The Earth, and the Anatolians named her Hebat, Virgin Mother Earth.

Adamah, the original feminine form of Adam, means “bloody clay,” although male scholars usually refer to this generative element as “red Earth.” Hmmmm. Eve means something like, “Mother Earth the Creator” and Adam means, “Made from Earth.” So I ask you, just who gave birth to whom? And who, if you please, Doctor Freud, is envious of what?

Let us remember the matter of mothers this Mother’s Day. The Hallmarking of this yearly commercial salute to Mom is like American cheese — a goopy gauze which allows us to go totally unconscious about our mothers. Instead, we may act out the picture of having what passes as a relationship. You know, the special menu Mother’s Day brunch, the gifts, the picture of what it all looks like. But what about the real relationship?

Mothers get a lousy rap from decades of psychoanalytic literature that basically lays at her feet blame and reason for all life-time events in her children’s lives. Yes, our mothers are powerful in us, but we need to know that at some very specific point in time, it’s up to us.
That’s a complicated subject for another day. Today I’m turning exclusively to the subject of caring.

Caring, as a feeling state, the ability to feel on behalf of another person’s existence and condition, does not come in every human package. It is also true that though we may be endowed with the ability to feel and care for another person, our expression of caring is not always clearly demonstrated. Caring deeply can also bring out the worst in people. As a child in response to a caring, imperfect mother, this can be very upsetting, to say the least. But I believe that the presence of a mother who cares is registered in the core of the baby in a nourishing, essential way.

For those of us who are lucky to have a mother who really cared about us, let me make it clear:
This is a supreme luxury we have. It’s easy to cast a critical eye on the methods, styles, imperfections, unintentional hurtfulness, and ways our mother’s caring communication seemed to go awry. The great majority of people are impoverished and have not been given the gift of what we have in our mothers.

Let’s not today. Let’s just identify the unheralded, invisible truth of the gift of having had a mother who authentically cared. Only that. And that alone is very big.

Ask those who did not have a mother who cared for them. They know.

So here’s to caring. But mostly, here’s to my mother, a woman who never for one moment stops caring.

Mother’s Day used to be simple. It was a holiday when I would strive to come up with an original gift for my mother. When I was very young, part of the ritual included marking the occasion with my Grandmother. The first years after she died, I always wondered if my mother’s primary thoughts were with her during our Sunday celebration.

By the time I hit my early 30s, people presumed that I had given birth. Well-intentioned folks offered me “Happy Mother’s Day” wishes. With a mixture of mordant humor and aggrieved annoyance I would answer, “I’m nobody’s mother. Even my dog is dead.”

Eventually, I entered into the “hallowed” classification of mother when my son was born. His August arrival gave me until the following May to ease into my new role, yet I felt like an imposter on that day which had always been about paying homage to my mother. After all, who was I to encroach upon her territory? I was just getting started. Moreover, I was struggling to adjust to the ramifications of being another human being’s caretaker.

Nine years later, by the time I was more comfortable with my forever-altered status (but not with all the questions about what being a mother meant), my mother died after a three-year illness. Although she had lived a full life, I never expected it to end that way for her. My first Mother’s day without her was filled with sadness, anxiety, and the nagging question, “Who am I on this planet without my mother?”

Another seven years have passed. My son will be turning sixteen this summer. Recently, I have received phone calls from conflicted female compatriots calling to share their feelings about a holiday that is supposed to be suffused with love and happiness. The litany is expansive. The laments include: “Now that my mother is gone, I really miss her”; “I always hated Mother’s Day because I couldn’t stand my mother”; “My kids didn’t get me anything for Mother’s Day”; “I’m going to be alone on Mother’s Day.”

I was speaking with a friend who has children in the college/post-college sphere, parsing why women feel they need to be validated on Mother’s Day. “You have to validate yourself,” I told my friend firmly. “It’s no different than a relationship with a man.” I continued, “The answer lies in ourselves.”

Is it because even the flowers, dinners, and physical presence of offspring cannot take away the self-doubt and longing for the perfect mother we had all intended to be? Is it possible to be a mother without being convinced that you have made too many mistakes? Remembrances of piercing comments made in anger from a beloved child’s lips bring a fresh opportunity to reflect on personal failings and misgivings about the ability to mother.

American society plays a good game. It puts motherhood up on a pedestal, but does little to help women with childcare or creating an environment that would foster a work/life balance. The unpaid work that women do in the home is not respected. The function of caretaking is diminished until it is time to pay the piper – when something goes wrong. Inevitably, the question almost always comes down to, “Where was the mother?”

While on the bus during the last week of April, I saw a screaming headline from one of New York City’s finest tabloids. It read, “Cameron Douglas’ mom vacationed during son’s drug spiral.” I checked out the article online when I got home. It was a deconstruction of Diandra’s Douglas’ indifferent parenting skills. Needless to say, it didn’t mention Michael Douglas until the final paragraphs.

simple: a copy cat. Nothing to take personally as all you need to do is get a paper and a pen and start brainstorming. Start with what your mother means to you, it may be anything, from a friend to a cook a mother can be a number of things to her children and that I think is one of the greatest bits about a mother. Then once you have the ideas down you find a arithmetic pattern to fit it into so that it rhymes and the flow of the poem is somewhat consistent.

With just two days left for the big day for mothers around the world there is something of a craze going around with people looking for Happy Mothers Day pictures. The pictures are something that can be printed and usually have a lot of flowers in them though there are some Happy Mothers Day pictures which have mothers doing their characteristic activities like baking cakes or cookies in the kitchen with the window open and the sun shining outside.

I think that people should be more creative and genuine when it comes to Happy Mothers Day pictures as it is a very significant day and you should give something that is personal to your mother on Mothers Day. So the idea is very simple indeed and it requires just a piece of

So it has four or five steps in which the site will guide you through the whole thing and you can come up with your very own genuine and good looking Happy Mothers Day pictures.

To a mother this day means something that is dedicated solely to her so it should not be about something that you can just print off the internet.

In honor of Mother’s Day, HuffPost Impact presents It Just Takes One, a series on children and the tutors, mentors, guardians and others who have made a difference in their lives. We’ll be featuring a new story every day through Mother’s Day.

A successful attorney and dedicated husband in Texas, Ben de Leon had a busy life — he certainly didn’t have the free time to volunteer.

“I made up the excuse of ‘Well, I’ve got a job, I don’t have enough time. I’m married. I’m already committed to other things.’”

Four years ago, however, he learned about a mentoring program through the First Baptist Church in Austin, Texas. Churchgoers were told that the program needed more mentors, especially male mentors. Ben was hesitant, but says that taking the chance and becoming a mentor is one of the best choices he has ever made.

He was paired with a seven-year-old boy named Anthony Salda?a, who hasn’t seen his father in several years; his mother is also not a permanent figure in his life. Anthony lives with his grandparents, who put him on the waiting list at Big Brothers Big Sisters.

“I did not know Anthony’s age, demographic or what he had been through,” Ben said. “We just hit it off really well.”

Ben and Anthony were only supposed to be paired for a few months, but at the end of the school year, Anthony brought Ben a surprise.

“The final day of the last week that I saw him, he brought me a letter written from his grandmother — and I carry it in my briefcase — asking me to be his big brother. That letter clinched it for me.”

Anthony is now in sixth grade, and the two still see each other every week as part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. He’s an avid football and basketball player — in fact, his dream is to play football for his favorite team, the University of Texas Longhorns. As a mentor, Ben helps Anthony with math and other studies, but his real job is just to “be there” for him.

“I have tried to instill in him the importance of education,” Ben said. “Before we were matched, Anthony didn’t even know where the U of T campus was. One of the first things I showed him was the campus — showed him where I went to school and that he could do that too.”

Anthony and Big Brothers Big Sisters are now a fixture in Ben’s life — he can’t imagine it any other way. His dedication has not gone without notice. He was recognized as the 2009 National Big Brother of the Year. They were invited to the White House as part of National Mentoring Month. On the one-year anniversary of President Obama’s inauguration, Anthony introduced the President, speaking just after the first lady.

“I just can’t believe that we got to do that. I think Anthony kind of understands what it was he got to do. I can’t think of a kid in the U.S. who can say they got to introduce the president.”

Since being a mentor to Anthony, Ben and his wife have had two little girls of their own, two-and-a-half-year-old Anna, and Winslow, born on March 12 of this year. Anthony, he said, is a part of their family, and their relationship has made him a better father and a better attorney.

“He’s taught me a lot about patience, perseverance, about treating people with dignity and respect,” Ben said. “I subscribe to the golden rule, and as an attorney it’s sometimes hard to do that. I try to envision Anthony in the room with me when I’m on a phone call or in the court room or having a disagreement with opposing council. My relationship with Anthony has permeated every aspect of my life for the better. He’s taught me more than I ever could teach him.”

Ben’s most urgent request when talking to me was that I encourage others, especially men, to become “Bigs.” In central Texas alone, there are 350 kids on the waiting list, and 69 percent are boys. Only 37 percent of volunteer mentors are men. These statistics stay consistent across the country; male mentors are in consistent need.

Ben said: “If someone’s still on the fence — I would say that if they feel that tug in their heart, if they feel like they want to get involved, they need to take that next step and just fill out the application and let the rest of it fall into place.”

It is difficult to imagine a more wearying and heartbreaking scenario than the one playing out in my hometown and all along the northern Gulf Coast right now. Pensacola, Florida has endured temporary destructions at the hands of unruly hurricanes ever since she was settled. This, however, is the first time that the storm has floated in on the Gulf without hurricane hurly burly while nonetheless destroying shrimp, birds, fish, tourism and hope.

Nearly five years ago, my three young children, my husband, our two dogs, myself, and my daughter’s turtle made the frightening trip out of our then home in the greater New Orleans area to escape the monster known now simply as Katrina. For various reasons, we had to leave the day the storm was to wash ashore, and a two and a half hour trip to Pensacola became a 12 hour crawl with the outer bands of the storm buffeting our car and washing away parts of our route. Still, as anyone who saw the news during those dark days knows, we were incredibly lucky to get out at all.

When we reached our destination, we hunkered down in my Mother’s home for what we thought would be a few days respite from the hot, muggy weather that would accompany the inevitable power outages back in Louisiana. We had no idea that what actually lay ahead was weeks of waiting without means of communication with our friends and neighbors. We lived in limbo watching the Dante-esque struggles along with everyone else on the omnipresent television sets and wondering : “Do I recognize that street?” “Do we know those people?” “Are we deserters for not being there when our community is suffering so vividly?”

Desertion is very much on my mind these days. Again, omnipresent televisions blare the news about the slick of oil moving towards Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and my Florida, and the familiar sense of ‘I should be there doing something’ nags me. I grew up on those beaches. I learned to swim and sail and surf in that water. I dug in that sand and baked in that sun, all elements which, although I am far from home , still infuse every pore of my being.

To really understand this area, you have to understand shrimp. Up here, Gulf Shrimp are an expensive delicacy, but, back home, shrimp are the food of everyman. They are plentiful, sweet and, just ask Forrest Gump, the staple of at least a million different recipes. I remember going to the docks at Joe Patti’s Seafood with my Mother to buy shrimp fresh from the nets. Shrimp Boils populated my childhood, and songs of shrimp boats returning still fill my ears.

Now, shrimpers who just got their lives back in order after losing boats, and nets and businesses to Katrina are likely to lose their livelihoods again to a different kind of environmental destruction. The oil slick has already reached the Louisiana wetlands. As it moves farther east, it will likely destroy the shrimp harvesting of Gulf Shores, Dauphin Island, Pensacola, etc. as well as the livelihoods of thousands who can ill afford such setbacks.

Alone on my way back from a reconnaissance trip to New Orleans after Katrina, a man walked out on into the fast lane of Interstate 10 and lay his body down on the road perpendicular to my car. The road was mercifully uncrowded that day and I was able to stop in time. I waited while he got up off the highway and he turned to me, uttered something in disgust, and walked off towards a bridge. I called the State Police and waited on the median until I saw them come, but I didn’t get out, and I’ll never know what happened to him.

To this day I am haunted by that man and what I might have said if I had gotten out. I don’t know if he would have listened, and it would have been a dangerous thing to do. What do you say to someone that desperate? I wish I knew. I fear that in the wake of this new disaster there will be desperation to spare. I hope someone more eloquent than I is able to find the words and the actions to help.

I always say I’m more of a cook than a baker. My freewheeling, improvisational style doesn’t do well with exact recipes for finicky fripperies. However, a few times a year there are things like birthdays, and so I am asked by my children to bake. They know what to expect by now. It will taste absolutely fabulous…and probably look like something the dog threw up.

This year Eve asked me to make her favorite chocolate cake. It’s a recipe that my mother-in-law had saved from a 1940s McCall’s magazine! It’s absolutely delicious and not too sweet. It’s that fluffy chocolate-cake goodness that is captured in a Tastykake, only better.

This year I had already fixed the layer that fell to pieces, but at the last minute I decided to add organic sprinkles to the top. When I first put them on, it looked picture-perfect. But an hour later when I went to serve the cake, the sprinkles had melted and the cake looked like it had a bad, bad case of poison ivy. Ick! But it tasted fantastic, and by the next morning the whole cake was gone. Eve was happy, and that’s all that matters.

Here is the recipe. I’m sure you all can make it look better than mine. When my mother-in-law made it the first time, it looked like it came right out of a magazine!

“Rich, Real, Devil’s Food Cake”

What’s cool about this recipe is that it doesn’t use any “power tools,” and the resulting cake is so light and not-too-sweet that it almost seems impossible. What I love about the original article (which is still in my mother-in-law’s house) is the photo of a woman’s naked hand stirring a raw egg into the batter. It’s so sensual. Nana Cinquino made it for Eve’s eighth birthday, and it instantly became a family classic. I use all organic ingredients, and it works great.

Ingredients:

2¼ cups sifted flour–organic cake flour, if you can find it
2 teaspoons baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup butter
2½ cups brown sugar, firmly packed
3 eggs
3 one-ounce squares unsweetened chocolate
½ cup sour milk or buttermilk
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup boiling water (the secret to its moistness!)

(Note: You can also try substituting the boiling water with boiling coffee. My friend Mark Kintzel made me a cake once that tasted much like this one, but he used coffee instead of water. It was his mother’s recipe.)

Directions:

1. Start the oven at 350 or 375 degrees. Grease the bottoms and sides of three 8-inch cake pans (I use only two), and dust with flour. Sift the flour, measure it carefully, and sift it again with the baking soda and salt. (Tip from the magazine: Sift the flour once onto wax paper. Fill the measuring cup to slightly overflowing, cut off the excess to make level, and dump it into the sifter again with the soda and salt.)

2. Cream, or work, the butter in a bowl with your hands until it’s soft and airy. Then add the sugar a little at a time, and continue creaming until fluffy and light. Add the unbeaten eggs, one at a time. Beat the batter hard after the addition of each egg (it’s OK to use a fork or a spoon).

3. Put the chocolate in a measuring cup and melt over boiling water. When melted, add to the batter. Use a scraper to get every bit of melted chocolate from the sides of the cup. Mix thoroughly.

4. Sift one-third of the flour into the batter, stir in well. Add half of the sour milk or buttermilk and stir slightly. Repeat, ending with the flour.

5. Mix in the vanilla extract and the boiling water.

6. Pour batter into greased cake pans and don’t be alarmed at the thinness of the batter!

7. Bake 25 to 30 minutes.

8. Remove from the oven and turn the cake pans upside down to release the cakes onto a rack to cool.

9. When cool, spread the frosting (see below) between the layers and pile it high on top of your cake. Cover the sides. Sprinkle the top with shaved bitter chocolate (or not–we like it without, too!)

Whipped Cream Frosting

You can make this with or without the cocoa. We prefer it without.

Ingredients:

1½ cups heavy cream
¼ cup sugar (I use powdered)
2 Tablespoons cocoa
½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:

Mix (do not WHIP!) all ingredients in a bowl. Set in your refrigerator to chill for 2 hours at least. Longer is OK. Then beat until mixture is so thick it holds its shape and will stand in peaks. Whipping with an old-fashioned hand mixer takes 10 to 15 minutes, and is good exercise for the arms.

Mom tip: It took me years to understand that you simply can’t frost a cake when it’s still hot. It will break apart and crumble into the frosting. Patience–in cooking, baking, and in life–is sometimes hard to learn, but often worth the effort. However, I still have to work on it!

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell just opened up another wound in our country’s abysmal racist history with his decision to name April Confederate History Month in Virginia–and to do so without mentioning slavery as the cause of the Civil War–or even at all. And only acknowledging the role of slavery two days later after intense uproar from Virginians and people alike across the country.

It is the height of white male privilege for politicians like McDonnell or Georgia’s Governor Sonny Purdue to use symbols of the Civil War, slavery, the Confederacy, and racism without regard to how painful that is for so many of our people–not just African-Americans.

I am grateful every day that when I was grown my mother told me about my family’s racial heritage. We were and are Scots-Irish, American Indian, and African-American as so many white southerners are–especially those of us from frontier areas like my native northwest Tennessee and southeast Missouri.

I was raised white in the South with all the privilege that entails. I am not trying to make a claim. But it is a little understood truth that so many of us have a multi-race heritage.

So every spring when folks ask me where i went to get that tan I struggle about whether to just say I brown up easy or to say if I lived mostly outdoors like most of my ancestors i would be this color all the time because Big Mama (my mother’s grandmother} was the first in my family to pass for white and my mother said we were Black Indians and both my grandfather’s looked America Indian.

I love the South and I miss it all the time but I am not confused about its history or why big Mama wouldn’t allow her own brother to dismount his horse in her yard and come into the house in rural northwest Tennessee hard by the Mississippi River because he was too dark. Bob McDonnell is a racist and a fool just like Sonny Purdue and Jim DeMint and so many others.

Our nation’s racial destiny is to collect on Thomas Jefferson’s words that “All men are created equal” or as President Obama would say move “toward a more perfect union.” The Civil War was our nation’s greatest freedom struggle. African-American’s elusive freedom in that ward cost 600,000 lives. It is the worst kind of fool and racist to pretend the Confederacy fought for noble reasons.

We shouldn’t honor the traitors to the union who fought for the Confederacy even if some of them were our Scot’s-Irish ancestors.

On Good Friday last week, we spread my mother’s ashes.

She had passed away in late December, and it seemed fitting to wait until spring to fulfill her final wish, which was to have her ashes spread at a few of her favorite places. We debated about whether it was better to separate her ashes or put them all in one place; but in the end, we did what she would have wanted, not what we might have thought was right.

My sister Heidi had the idea to plant trees and spread the ashes around them like fertilizer. And so, we did: We put the ashes in the hole with each tree, and then covered the roots with fresh soil–an oak, a scarlet maple, and a hickory-nut tree (one day, readers, I will share her famous hickory-nut cake recipe with you all!). Heidi also brought crystals to hang from the branches. My mother was famous for sending a crystal to anyone who had recently experienced the death of a loved one–with the message that any time they saw a rainbow, they should think of the person they lost. She loved rainbows. She loved crystals. She loved feeling helpful, and loved feeling needed by others.

It wasn’t a sad day. We were all relieved to see her suffering end. But we did all feel the finality of the moment. I think my mother would feel happy (and probably slightly jealous, although she would hate to admit it) that the family still enjoys being together, and will continue on without her.

One of the things I learned from growing up with her is that we are each on our own journey, with our own personal mission and purpose. She has moved on to the next part of her journey–whatever or wherever that may be. And we are now free to move on with our own journeys.

Who knows where they will lead. But I’m sure there will be rainbows along the way.

The Associated Press: The brother of figure skater Nancy Kerrigan was charged with manslaughter in the death of their 70-year-old father in what prosecutors called a violent attack during a “trivial” argument over use of the family telephone, the district attorney’s office said Thursday.

The director Brady is experienced in penning comedy movies, for he has written a lot of sequences of “Home Improvement” along with other stuff. He has also written some episodes for The Simpsons. Allen Covert, acknowledged at present as the sensation of “Grandma’s Boy” has worked together with Adam from the start, also as Adam made a disaster of a film named “Going Overboard” during1989. Every human being needs to feel connected – attached – to other human beings around them. It’s an innate craving we all have and cannot fight. The hunger for attachment begins with infants who bond with their mother’s soothing voices, tender caresses and nurturing care. It’s through this kind of attention the child comes to know the feelings of being safe and protected. The quality of the early bonds children form with adults in their world will affect every relationship they’ll have for the rest of their lives.

Sadly, some children never get the love they need to grow into healthy, empathetic, trusting people. As they grow they form their own protective shield to keep out the rest of the world. They have no trust in others and their behavior often turns self-destructive and even criminal.

What ails this unfortunate group now has a name: Reactive Attachment Disorder. It’s a fairly new addition to the American Psychiatric Association’s book that lists every recognized psychiatric disorder known to man – The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

The professionals say RAD, as it’s called, this isn’t just a trendy diagnosis du jour. They’ve discovered that young children who fail to form meaningful bonds, those who display early aggression and anti-social behaviors, often grow up to be sociopaths and turn to lives of crime.

In other words, RAD kids are the potential criminals of tomorrow. If we would only dedicate time and money to serve the needs of these children today we might all be spared their wrath, their potentially deadly deeds, in the future.

“If you see a serial killer chances are very strong they were a RAD kid,” says Jay Pullen, Executive Director of The Attachment Healing Center in Albuquerque. He mentions convicted Oklahoma City bomber, Timothy McVeigh as likely being a RAD sufferer. I mention serial killer and cannibal, Jeffery Dahmer.

Pullen says it’s fairly easy to diagnose RAD children as they often display a wide range of similar behaviors: setting fires, making violent threats, smearing feces, killing animals or stealing food as a way to combat their early memories of being left hungry. All these behaviors are designed to repel other people so they can more comfortably retreat into their solitary shell.

Director Pullen is quick to say RAD is not a life-time curse, there are successful ways to treat these kids. All it takes is time, money and the determination to help.

States from New Mexico to Missouri, from California to New York are desperately searching for ways to lessen the plight of neglected children. The motivation perfectly captured in this quote from former Chief Justice Kathleen Blatz of Minnesota’s Supreme Court, “the difference between that poor child and a felon, is about eight years.”

There may be no other time in history when so many children are separated, ignored or neglected by the very people who are supposed to love them the most. According to the Children’s Defense Fund record numbers of kids are shuffled between foster homes these days or are reported to be victims of emotional and sexual abuse. If a parent is depressed or angry or addicted it’s likely their children aren’t getting the nurturing they need.

You may think you’re not affected by Reactive Attachment Disorder but Pullen says nothing could be further from the truth. Your tax dollars go to deal with RAD kids once they enter the justice or adoption system. When you see graffiti on the side of a building, a neighbor’s home damaged by an arson fire or when your child’s classroom is repeatedly disrupted by the disordered child, Reactive Attachment Disorder does affect you and yours.

Pioneering in-house treatments have been devised to help willing parents learn the most effective way to deal with these self-sabotaging children. One mother of a RAD child had to learn to ignore her daughter’s chilling notes. One the girl taped to the foot of her bed read, “I’m going to slash your throat with a butcher knife.” Instead of reacting negatively to that as she tucked in the child the mother learned to say instead, “Yes, I see that. Now, hop into bed we have to get you off to school in the morning.” That kind of statement acknowledges the youngster’s message but reinforces trust by presenting the idea that parent and child are part of a team.

The experts on RAD say it all comes down to neurologically re-wiring these kids to break their bad behavior cycles. In cases where parents are at the crux of the problem RAD therapists recommend removing the children to a more nurturing environment. Foster and adoptive parents are often these kids best hope.

We ignore these troubled children at our own peril. If we don’t help them assimilate now they could come back to grab our attention in much more serious and dangerous ways.

Earlier this week news began spreading of the former Gators quarterback Tim Tebow and his role in a Superbowl ad paid for by well known Christian organization — Focus On the Family. The ad is supposed to highlight the story of Pam Tebow who after becoming ill on the mission field refused doctor’s suggestions to abort her 5th child, Heisman trophy winner Tim Tebow. The CBS network has already approved the script for the ad which is set to air during this year’s Superbowl and expected to promote a theme of “Celebrating Family and Life.”

Today, SI.com reported that a coalition of women’s groups called on CBS to scrap its plan to broadcast the ad during the Super Bowl featuring college football star Tim Tebow and his mother, which is by nature likely to convey an anti-abortion message.

The New York-based Women’s Media Center was coordinating the protest with backing from the National Organization for Women, the Feminist Majority and other groups.

“An ad that uses sports to divide rather than to unite has no place in the biggest national sports event of the year — an event designed to bring Americans together,” said Jehmu Greene, president of the Women’s Media Center.

There has also been criticism from current sports journalists who oppose the discussion of abortion being brought to the public on Superbowl Sunday. A columnist for CBSSports.com, Gregg Doyel, also objected to the CBS decision to show the ad, specifically because it would air on Super Sunday.

“If you’re a sports fan, and I am, that’s the holiest day of the year,” he wrote. “It’s not a day to discuss abortion. For it, against it, I don’t care what you are. On Super Sunday, I don’t care what I am. Feb. 7 is simply not the day to have that discussion.”

The controversy over the ad was raised Sunday when Tebow met with reporters.

“I know some people won’t agree with it, but I think they can at least respect that I stand up for what I believe,” Tebow said. “I’ve always been very convicted of it (his views on abortion) because that’s the reason I’m here, because my mom was a very courageous woman. So any way that I could help, I would do it.”

I’ve never been a fan of the Gators, which usually put me rooting against Tim Tebow for the last few years. But on this issue, I’ll be the first to stand with Tim Tebow and argue that if given the opportunity he should not have to censor the story of his life for people who don’t like the message it may convey.

Tim Tebow should not have to be silenced simply because telling his story implies that his life was sincerely valuable to his mother.

No one to my knowledge has begun to cry out against godaddy.com’s sexually provocative commercials set to air during the Superbowl, which founder Bob Parsons claims will be the “hottest” ads yet.

When someone does a good deed, should they be forced never to tell the story simply because there may be someone who presented with the same situation acted differently? This isn’t about whether you believe Roe vs. Wade should be overturned or not, this about whether or not we should be permitted to tell a good story.

If my life is imperfect in an area, is it OK for me to censor all people who have achieved success in that area of life? Am I allowed to close my ears to anyone who hasn’t lived their life just as I have lived mine? No, I don’t believe so.

So given the opportunity to tell his story, with whatever message it may by nature convey, Tim Tebow, tell your story. It is in fact divisive, but so is the gospel of Jesus Christ. The gospel divides the believers from the un-believers, and the result of our beliefs is not a matter of option, but one of either eternal peace or eternal damnation.

But I’ll stop now, my language just got highly divisive and unfit to be told in public, and especially not during the Superbowl.
