On Monday night hundreds came out to the Broadview Detention Center in suburban Chicago to protest the growing racism against immigrants epitomized by passage of an Arizona law widely seen as promoting racial profiling of Latinos.

The following morning, dozens were arrested in an attempt to blockade vans taking deportees out of the country.

Besides racial profiling, a particularly noxious provision of Arizona’s SB 1070 will criminalize anyone who does not report undocumented immigrants in their midst — effectively trying to turn teachers, healthcare workers, neighbors and religious advisers into agents of the government.

LGBT people with an international viewpoint will note the parallels this provision has to that of a noxious anti-gay bill currently pending in Uganda. The Ugandan bill threatens criminal penalties against those who don’t report Gays, Lesbians and Bisexuals to the authorities.

In signing the anti-immigrant bill, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer claimed she did so because “it represents what is best for Arizona.” But not only does Brewer’s “Arizona” not encompass immigrants or Latinos, it also apparently doesn’t include Gays, Lesbians and Bisexuals. Governor Brewer, who has said “God has placed me in this powerful position,” last year nixed domestic partners health benefits for state employees who are part of same-sex couples.

Some Democratic politicians have attempted to cast President Obama as an ally against SB 1070, and earlier today Obama voiced opposition to it.

But seen in the context of his actions, Obama’s “opposition” to SB 1070 is little more than political posturing. His after-the-fact opposition seems designed mainly to secure the burgeoning Latino vote, while delivering no substantive reforms for immigrants.

He has continued to build the wasteful and environmentally destructive border wall. His anti-NAFTA one-up-man-ship versus Hillary Clinton during the rust state primaries (the economic devastation wrought by NAFTA being a primary driver of immigration) is now conveniently forgotten.

Under Obama, the rate of deportations has increased nearly 50 percent last year over the number deported by George W. Bush in 2007. When challenged by the racist right, Obama pirouetted to the right in true Clintonian fashion, boasting that his health care “reform” explicitly excludes undocumented immigrants, unlike the universal health care programs in place in most other economically advanced nations.

The “Yes We Can” candidate cynically appropriated the main slogan of the immigrant rights movement (“Si se peude”), delivered nothing, and now expects the left to bail his party out in the Congressional bi-elections. The immigrant rights movement, indeed all progressive movements, must resist this lure.

Our movements have won their greatest gains not by dint of which party was in office, but by how powerful we were in the streets. And that power derives not just from large numbers in the streets, but even more importantly, our independence from both major parties.

A few years ago, huge numbers successfully mobilized against the Sensenbrenner bill. But once that bill was defeated, the immigration rights movement rapidly deflated, as many of its leaders gave political cover to the Democrats, who now held the main levers of power in Washington. Lack of opposition to the main power in DC tragically neutered the movement at a time when its huge numbers in the streets, combined with the momentum brought by the defeat of Sensenbrenner, could have been the springboard to widespread amnesties for the undocumented.

This Saturday’s May Day march is an excellent opportunity to rebuild the elan of the movement seen in the early days against Sensenbrenner, and hopefully rebuild it on a far more solid political basis than the failed reliance on the Democrats.

The rally begins at 1 PM in Union Park (just south of the Green and Pink el lines’ “Ashland” stop at Ashland Avenue and Lake Street, followed by a march to the Loop beginning at 3 PM.

Since 2008, when Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John McCain stepped to their respective microphones and asked us to change the world, many young people have responded to the challenge, whether you’ve seen it on the nightly news or not.

Understandably, things are less sexy now. Governing yields compromise and interest groups, as opposed to the soaring idealism of the speeches we hear when politicians are on the trail and the clear metrics of success we measure at the ballot box.

Many say that the historic election was an isolated moment in time and that momentum has plateaued, but 2008 was the beginning of something that will manifest itself in the coming decade, starting with November’s midterm election, to 2012, 2014 and beyond as our nation’s demographics shift toward majority Millennial voters. It was the arrival of a generation that has since taken action to support our values system and vision for the future. We are often criticized as disappearing acts, or celebrity-crazed misanthropes who want the posters for our walls more than we respect the politics.

I don’t believe we disappeared. We went to work on the issues we care about. We demanded marriage equality, participated in the health care debate, fought for the rights of our peers who are veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, called for an independent energy future, demanded fiscal responsibility, rallied for access to higher education and pushed for a more transparent government free to utilize the digital tools that are unique to our communications.

Last week I moderated a panel, “From Campaign to Governing: Twitter by the Issues” at Jeff Pulver’s #140conf at the 92 Y in which we discussed how the momentum from 2008 fissured into smaller, nimble and effective issue groups in the digital sphere. The conversation featured Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America’s Paul Reickhoff, CNN-contributor and former advisor to President Bush Leslie Sanchez, Energy Action Coalition’s Whit Jones and Capitol Hill Tweet Watch founder and conservative strategist David All. The nuanced maneuvering of young people working on issue politics, as we discuss in the panel, might not have made headlines competing with such pressing news as whether Sarah Palin deserves to host a show on the Discovery Channel or if Barack Obama was really born in the United States. That doesn’t negate the fact that we are still here, heads down, working hard.

I believe in the limitless opportunity of the next two years, in which I am confident my generation will continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible in politics. The technological innovations that changed the political organizing game in ‘08 have scratched the surface of what we’ll produce going forward. The coming midterm election in November will be an incubator of thought-leaders who will position themselves at the forefront of debate in 2012, and who absolutely cannot be ignored in 2016.

For this reason I’m also pleased to announce that I’ve taken a job as Communications Director at Rock the Vote.

Over the last 10 years, I’ve been an advocate for my peers while working as a columnist and political commentator, appearing in print, on television, radio and in the blogosphere. In this new role, I’ll continue to weigh in on important civic participation trends at the intersection of politics, media and technology. Now I’m thrilled to be on the front lines of the mission to remind people that in every interaction is the chance to be a leader, beginning with the simple act of voting.

In the Digital Millennial Era, it’s my hope that we’ll take the opportunity to show our peers that it’s possible to respect each others’ viewpoints, look for common ground, organize around historical power-financial structures, recognize progress made by our predecessors and build upon it in our own way, and refuse to submit to oversimplification and characterizations.

If you’re even remotely entertaining the idea that Millennials aren’t worth banking on this fall, I’d re-evaluate that strategy immediately and invest in the young people who will soon lead our country.

WASHINGTON (AP/Huffington Post) – Bill Clinton says someone who hasn’t been a judge should be considered for the Supreme Court.

But scratch the idea of the ex-president or his wife as a justice.

Clinton suggested that President Barack Obama follow a model that Clinton used when he tried unsuccessfully to persuade then-New York Gov. Mario Cuomo and then-Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell to agree to be nominated to the high court.

Justice John Paul Stevens’ recent decision to retire hands Obama a second chance to shape the court.

Clinton, who has not been a judge, said that at 63, told ABC’s “This Week” that he’s too old to be considered, much as he might enjoy serving on the Supreme Court. He said his wife, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, also might have been interested in past years, but not now.

“She’s like me, you know, we’re kind of doers,” the former president said. “We like being out there and doing things, rowing our own boat and making changes we could see happen.”

Bill Clinton, who also had two court vacancies during his first years in office, ended up nominating two federal appeals court judges, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer. Ginsburg was 60 and Breyer was in his early 50s.

The former president urged Obama to pick someone around 50 years old.

“Because I’m already 63-years-old, I hope I live to be 90. I hope I’m just as healthy as Justice Stevens is. But it’s not predictable,” Clinton told ABC’s Jake Tapper. “I’d like to see him put someone in there, late 40s, early 50s, on the court and someone with a lot of energy for the job.”

Obama’s Democratic predecessor in the White House says Cuomo and Mitchell, who had been a judge before serving in the Senate, would have made good justices, but both turned him down. He said he hopes Obama takes a look at someone who hasn’t been a judge.

Among those reported to be under consideration, Solicitor General Elena Kagan, 49, has never been a judge.

Others who fit that description are Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, 52, Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, 51 and Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, 53.

Last year, Obama chose another federal appellate judge, Sonia Sotomayor.
