At one point on the roughly two minute tape, the man says: “You go out in public and it’s a f***ing embarrassment to me. You look like a f***ing b**** on heat and if you get raped by a pack of n***ers it will be your fault.”
It’s unclear when the audio was recorded.

I used to have a real job, but now I chase celebrity real estate listings for a living. Actually, that was what I used to do for my real job too. What can I say? Journalism isn’t about what it used to be. Here are some pickings from the week.

Barbie’s Doll House

Collecting $50,000 a month in rent for the past two years is nothing to sneeze at, but Barbie Benton – who will go to her grave being known first and foremost as Hugh Hefner’s ex-girlfriend – is ready to call it quits with long-distance land-lording. She and husband George Gradow spend most of their time in Aspen — and who needs the albatross of a 15,000-square-foot Bel Air mansion hanging over your head?

Benton has listed it for $12,900,000. Yes, she will take $50,000 a month if another tenant who isn’t part of a heavy metal band can be found, but she’d prefer to sell. The contemporary home in the Holmby Hills neighborhood has its own 2.4-acre promontory with views of the city and ocean. The dining room seats 32 and in addition to the three-car garage there is parking for more than 20 cars — suggesting that at one time, the Barb-meister did a fair amount of entertaining. The home has 8 bedrooms and 14 bathrooms, four fireplaces, a library, gym, wine cellar, media room, elevator and spa. There is a detached two-bedroom, two-bathroom guesthouse off the pool plus a separate two-bedroom, two-bathroom staff residence. Nothing wrong with a lot of space.

The home has been rented by singer Mariah Carey, actor Michael Caine and Prince, who recorded his 2006 album, 3121, in the house and named it after the property.

Benton, who graced the Playboy cover several times, never reached the coveted centerfold status – despite her seven-year relationship with the boss, which I suppose proves you can’t sleep your way to the middle. Since putting her clothes back on, she’s best known for her years as a regular on the county music series Hee Haw. She also had a top five hit on Billboard’s country singles chart in 1975 with “Brass Buckles.” Benton has recorded eight albums, the last of which she produced herself.

Hanoi Jane’s rebirthing loft

Actress-activist-fitness guru Jane Fonda has listed her Atlanta loft for sale or lease. Having divorced CNN founder Ted Turner in 2001, about the only question is why it’s taken Jane so long to divorce Atlanta. She’s been there for 19 years but is now headed back to Los Angeles where she plans to resume her acting career.

This is how she describes the entryway of the 4,700-square-foot loft she is leaving: “To me it is a womb with a narrow birth channel and then you enter the wide open sunny loft to be reborn again.” Welcome home to Los Angeles, I say.

There is also apparently a mirror above the master bed, shielded in the listing photos by an oval canopy with wooden tassels. The master bedroom also has a glass fireplace. Listing price: $4.5 million; lease it for $10,000 a month.

The amazingly fit Fonda has been an activist for varied political causes, the most noted one being her opposition to the Vietnam War. The allegedly retired from the film industry in 1991, but has made several movies and a zillion exercise videos since then. Last year, she earned a Tony nomination for her role on the Broadway show 33 Variations.

The listing agent for her Atlanta property is Tina Hunsicker at Atlanta Fine Homes, Sotheby’s International Realty.

With apologies to David Geffen and all those other Carbon Beach dwellers, I just don’t see the allure of that particular stretch of sand. Give me the further north stretch known as Broad Beach any day. In fact, if you give me $40 million, I can tell you precisely the property I’d buy.

It’s actually an estate that sits on a double lot, owned by Paula Kent Meehan, the cofounder of Redken hair care products. It just came on the market at $39,995,000 and has the breathtaking vistas to prove it. The two homes that sit on the property have a combination of eight bedrooms and nine baths in 5,887 square feet. The two homes are gated and have a combined 175 feet of beach frontage. Both homes have been fully remodeled.

A man has been arrested in connection with Saturday’s attempted car bombing in New York’s Times Square.

The suspect is Faisal Shahzad, a 30-year-old U.S. citizen of Pakistani descent. The Connecticut native was captured at JFK International Airport while attempting to board a flight to Dubai. According to a colleague, CNN’s Deb Feyerick “reports the suspect was taken off the plane when he was arrested.”

Statement from U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder:

Earlier this evening, Faisal Shahzad was arrested in connection with the attempted car bombing in New York on Saturday. Mr. Shahzad, an American citizen, was taken into custody at JFK Airport in New York as he attempted to board a flight to Dubai.

Since this plot was first uncovered on Saturday night, the FBI, prosecutors and intelligence lawyers in the National Security Division of the Justice Department and the U.S. Attorneys Offices in Manhattan and Connecticut, along with the NYPD have worked night and day to find out who was responsible for what would have been a deadly attack had it been successful. Over the course of the day today, we have gathered significant additional evidence that led to tonight’s arrest, which was made by agents from Department of Homeland Security’s Customs and Border Protection.

This investigation is ongoing, as are our attempts to gather useful intelligence, and we continue to pursue a number of leads. But it’s clear that the intent behind this terrorist act was to kill Americans.

FBI agents are working with their state and local counterparts in New York, Connecticut and other jurisdictions to gather evidence and intelligence related to this case. We are also coordinating with other members of the President’s national security team to ensure we use every resource available to the United States to bring anyone responsible to justice.

We continue to gather leads in this investigation, and it’s important that the American people remain vigilant. The vehicle in Times Square was first noticed on Saturday by a citizen who reported it to authorities, and, as always, any American who notices suspicious activity should report it to the appropriate law enforcement agencies.

This investigation is ongoing, it is multi-faceted, and it is aggressive. As we move forward, we will focus on not just holding those responsible for it accountable, but also on obtaining any intelligence about terrorist organizations overseas.

Because of the fast-moving nature of this investigation, I am not able to make any further information public at this time. But the American people should know that we are deploying every resource available, and we will not rest until we have brought everyone responsible to justice.

ASSOCIATED PRESS UPDATE: 2:00 AM – NEW YORK — A Pakistani man believed to be the driver of an SUV used as a car bomb in a failed terror attack on Times Square was taken into custody early Tuesday by federal and local police officials while trying to leave the country, a law enforcement official said.

The suspect, Faisal Shahzad, was identified by customs agents at John F. Kennedy International Airport and was stopped before boarding an Emirates airlines flight to Dubai, according to officials who spoke to The Associated Press early Tuesday on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the investigation. He had recently returned from a five-month trip to Pakistan, where he had a wife.

He was being held in New York and couldn’t be contacted. He has a Shelton, Conn., address; a phone number listed there wasn’t in service.

Law enforcement officials say Shahzad bought the SUV, a 1993 Nissan Pathfinder, from a Connecticut man about three weeks ago and paid cash. The officials spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the case.

Police said the bomb could have produced “a significant fireball” and sprayed shrapnel with enough force to kill pedestrians and knock out windows. The SUV was parked on a street lined with restaurants and Broadway theaters, including one showing “The Lion King,” and full of people out on a Saturday night.

The vehicle identification number had been removed from the Pathfinder’s dashboard, but it was stamped on the engine, and investigators used it to find the owner of record. The discovery was paramount to the investigation.

“The discovery of the VIN on the engine block was pivotal in that it led to the identifying the registered owner,” said Paul Browne, chief New York Police Department spokesman. “It continues to pay dividends.”

The U.S. attorney’s office in Manhattan will handle the case. An early morning call to the office was not immediately returned. It wasn’t clear if additional suspects were being sought.

Officials say the SUV’s registered owner, whose name has not been released, was not considered a suspect in the bomb scare.

Investigators tracked the license plate found on the rear of the SUV to a used auto parts shop in Stratford, Conn., where they discovered the plate was connected to a different vehicle. They also spoke to the owner of an auto sales shop in nearby Bridgeport because a sticker on the Pathfinder indicated the SUV had been sold by his dealership.

As the buyer came into focus, investigators backed off other leads. They had initially wanted to speak with a man apparently in his 40s who was videotaped shedding his shirt near the Pathfinder, but they backed away as the buyer became clear. The man had not been considered a suspect, and officials said it’s possible he was just a bystander.

In Washington on Monday, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Saturday’s attempted bombing was a terrorist act.

The motive remained unclear. The Pakistani Taliban appeared to claim responsibility for the bomb in three videos that surfaced after the weekend scare, monitoring groups said. New York officials said police have no evidence to support the claims. It was unclear if the suspect in custody had any relationship to the group.

The SUV was parked near offices of Viacom Inc., which owns Comedy Central. The network recently aired an episode of the animated show “South Park” that the group Revolution Muslim had complained insulted the Prophet Muhammad by depicting him in a bear costume.

The SUV was captured on video crossing an intersection at 6:28 p.m. Saturday. A vendor pointed out the Pathfinder to an officer about two minutes later. Times Square, clogged with tourists on a warm evening, was shut down for 10 hours. A bomb squad dismantled the explosive device, and no one was hurt.

The explosive device had cheap-looking alarm clocks connected to a 16-ounce can filled with fireworks, which were apparently intended to detonate the gas cans and set the propane afire in a chain reaction, said Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.

A metal rifle cabinet placed in the cargo area was packed with fertilizer, but NYPD bomb experts believe it was not a type volatile enough to explode like the ammonium nitrate grade fertilizer used in previous terrorist bombings.

The exact amount of fertilizer was unknown. Police estimated the cabinet weighed 200 to 250 pounds when they pulled it from the vehicle.

Tablets Not Cool For Microsoft: Just after HP confirmed their slate was on hold, Microsoft announced that their dual-screen Courier tablet is dead. Microsoft said it has “no plans to build such a device at this time.” Unlike the iPad and most other tablets and eReaders, the Courier was poised to be a dual-screen foldable device, smaller than the iPad, and more convenient, with superior graphics.

Since 2008, when Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John McCain stepped to their respective microphones and asked us to change the world, many young people have responded to the challenge, whether you’ve seen it on the nightly news or not.

Understandably, things are less sexy now. Governing yields compromise and interest groups, as opposed to the soaring idealism of the speeches we hear when politicians are on the trail and the clear metrics of success we measure at the ballot box.

Many say that the historic election was an isolated moment in time and that momentum has plateaued, but 2008 was the beginning of something that will manifest itself in the coming decade, starting with November’s midterm election, to 2012, 2014 and beyond as our nation’s demographics shift toward majority Millennial voters. It was the arrival of a generation that has since taken action to support our values system and vision for the future. We are often criticized as disappearing acts, or celebrity-crazed misanthropes who want the posters for our walls more than we respect the politics.

I don’t believe we disappeared. We went to work on the issues we care about. We demanded marriage equality, participated in the health care debate, fought for the rights of our peers who are veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, called for an independent energy future, demanded fiscal responsibility, rallied for access to higher education and pushed for a more transparent government free to utilize the digital tools that are unique to our communications.

Last week I moderated a panel, “From Campaign to Governing: Twitter by the Issues” at Jeff Pulver’s #140conf at the 92 Y in which we discussed how the momentum from 2008 fissured into smaller, nimble and effective issue groups in the digital sphere. The conversation featured Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America’s Paul Reickhoff, CNN-contributor and former advisor to President Bush Leslie Sanchez, Energy Action Coalition’s Whit Jones and Capitol Hill Tweet Watch founder and conservative strategist David All. (Watch below.)

The nuanced maneuvering of young people working on issue politics, as we discuss in the panel, might not have made headlines competing with such pressing news as whether Sarah Palin deserves to host a show on the Discovery Channel or if Barack Obama was really born in the United States. That doesn’t negate the fact that we are still here, heads down, working hard.

I believe in the limitless opportunity of the next two years, in which I am confident my generation will continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible in politics. The technological innovations that changed the political organizing game in ‘08 have scratched the surface of what we’ll produce going forward. The coming midterm election in November will be an incubator of thought-leaders who will position themselves at the forefront of debate in 2012, and who absolutely cannot be ignored in 2016.

For this reason I’m also pleased to announce that I’ve taken a job as Communications Director at Rock the Vote.

Over the last 10 years, I’ve been an advocate for my peers while working as a columnist and political commentator, appearing in print, on television, radio and in the blogosphere. In this new role, I’ll continue to weigh in on important civic participation trends at the intersection of politics, media and technology. Now I’m thrilled to be on the front lines of the mission to remind people that in every interaction is the chance to be a leader, beginning with the simple act of voting.

In the Digital Millennial Era, it’s my hope that we’ll take the opportunity to show our peers that it’s possible to respect each others’ viewpoints, look for common ground, organize around historical power-financial structures, recognize progress made by our predecessors and build upon it in our own way, and refuse to submit to oversimplification and characterizations.

If you’re even remotely entertaining the idea that Millennials aren’t worth banking on this fall, I’d re-evaluate that strategy immediately and invest in the young people who will soon lead our country.

NEW YORK — During a presentation to advertisers last week in New York City, CNN trotted out many of its big names: Anderson Cooper, John King, Sanjay Gupta, Candy Crowley, Nancy Grace and Wolf Blitzer, among them.

Larry King, host of what is still one of the network’s top-rated shows, appeared only in a film clip that flashed by for a second or two.

These are troubled times for “Larry King Live” as it approaches its 25th anniversary in June. The show’s viewership for the first three months of the year dropped 44 percent from 2009, and it usually trails Fox News Channel’s Sean Hannity and MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow in the time slot.

Once a pioneer, King now fights for relevancy.

There was a time when such a thought would be heresy.

“In the early days of the 1980s and 1990s, that was the place to go to get interviewed,” television historian Tim Brooks said. “Any politician, including presidential candidates, had to be on his show. That brought a lot of respect to CNN, and to cable as well.”

King moderated a memorable 1993 debate between Ross Perot and Vice President Al Gore. He even tried to mediate peace in the Middle East, bringing Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, King Hussein of Jordan and Israel’s Yitzhak Rabin together on a show. His influence was equally big with entertainers. A list of bold-faced names who had sat across the table from King would take in practically everyone in the entertainment business.

In those days, Larry King was New Media. Today, entertainers have many options, from visiting hip hosts such as Jon Stewart to maintaining their own Twitter feeds. King was never a challenging interviewer, but now politicians can find downright friendly ones.

It leaves King with pleasant but meandering chats with Willie Nelson, or the chance to talk to Martina Navritolova about her cancer treatment. On the day Conan O’Brien agreed to go to TBS, King brought three reporters in to chat about it.

Think about it. When was the last must-see Larry King interview?

For a network based in Atlanta and with a large New York office, King usually works out of Los Angeles. His executive producer since 1992, Wendy Walker, works from her home in San Diego, where CNN has built a control room for her. Some who know King suggested that’s a disconnected arrangement, and wonder whether he is getting the support he needs in booking and promotion. If you see an ad for CNN, it’s far more likely to feature Cooper or Blitzer.

CNN would not make King, Walker or network president Jon Klein available for interviews.

In a statement, King spokesman Ryan Jimenez said, “Ratings trend just as the competitors, but what distinguishes Larry is the fact that time and time again the biggest newsmakers continue to talk with the King because he’s fair and unbiased. We’re extremely proud of what Larry accomplishes night after night.”

King’s simple, conversational style often annoys people who want interviews with more rigor and preparation. His supporters believe the everyman approach has been underestimated but worry that King, at age 76, is losing a step. Mistaking Roman Polanski for Charles Manson earlier this year was cringe-worthy. Last week, King seemed unaware of “Family Guy.” And when he asked Jerry Seinfeld if his popular sitcom was canceled, it became an Internet embarrassment.

“It’s almost as if he’s interviewing on automatic pilot and he’s picking up a ball game through his fillings,” said Gail Shister, who teaches TV criticism at the University of Pennsylvania.

King is also going through a divorce with his seventh wife, Shawn King. He filed papers Wednesday shortly before she also sought to end the couple’s nearly 13-year-old marriage. Both cited “irreconcilable differences.”

His show averaged 759,000 viewers the first three months of the year, according to the Nielsen Co. That’s less than half of his peak year, in 1998, when “Larry King Live” drew 1.64 million viewers each night. As recently as 2003, King averaged 1.54 million.

CNN contends he’s been hurt this year by a slow news cycle compared to the busy first few months of the Obama administration in 2009. Other news shows are down, too, both on CNN and MSNBC. Direct competitor Maddow is down 38 percent. Only Fox News Channel has been flourishing lately.

King shows no indication of wanting to leave, and takes great pride in an upcoming citation by the Guinness Book of World Records in June as the longest-running host of the same show on the same network in the same time slot. He’s been in broadcasting more than 50 years. “I’m basically still just a little Jewish kid from Brooklyn,” he told students at George Washington University last month. “I still do enjoy it.”

CNN hasn’t shown any signs that it wants him out. Remember, “Larry King Live” is still one of the network’s most popular programs and the network has bigger problems with which to deal.

King has no heir apparent, either; no regular substitute host. Klein has made a point of saying that when King leaves, CNN is not tied to plugging a different person into the same kind of show.

Circumstances could force a change. What if Katie Couric decides to leave CBS News when her contract is up next year and expresses an interest in that slot? Cooper is a CNN favorite and might work better in an earlier time slot. Joy Behar’s talk show on the affiliated HLN network has done well and her string of one-liners made her popular with the advertisers this week.

Some have suggested a slow transition with King, not unlike what ABC has done with Barbara Walters. Relieve him of daily duties, yet have him conduct special interviews several times a year.

With an audience dominated by older viewers, easing someone out is fraught with peril.

“Larry is a legacy there,” said Frank Sesno, a former CNN Washington bureau chief now a professor at George Washington University. “They have to handle this very, very carefully. Any time there is someone of Larry King’s stature, they are going to have a big, loyal, dedicated following. That’s the base. And the first rule of politics is not to alienate your base.”

“You are scaring people all over the country,” Lou Dobbs, the former CNN anchor, declared to a crowd of thousands stretching down 8th Avenue from 33rd to 28th streets beside the James A. Farley Post Office in Manhattan at a quarter to nine o’clock.

He’s right. They are. But, not for the correct reasons. David Webb, the master of ceremonies and host of the conservative talk show “The Grinder”, nearly two hours earlier told the crowd, “America is looking at these signs and wondering what we think.” The signs ran from the humorous jabbing at the President’s euphemistically girlish toss on Opening Day with “Obama: You suck at baseball and your socialist policies are destroying our country” to the crude as displayed on a t-shirt, “Spay and Neuter Liberals”. What the t-shirts, signs and speakers who ranged from doctors and talk-show hosts to national security commentators like Kathleen Troia McFarland, didn’t offer were concrete solutions to the problems they saw.

The Tea Party members were a little older and less racially mixed but by and large were just like any other American. They share the same problems too. Mike, a white-bearded volunteer for the aptly named “Tea Party 365″, said he joined because, “All over my neighborhood I see businesses going out of business.” Similarly, Anna, a Polish immigrant working at an eatery nearby, was drawn to the crowd because she thinks, “Americans pay too many taxes for nothing,” and added despairingly, “America’s supposed to be for small business”.

These are normal people who want answers that fit their lifestyle. The people in the crowd weren’t heretics, racists or homophobes. Although it took nearly two hours, David Webb finally said, “This is not a republican movement. This is an American movement,” which they see as bi-partisan. The crowd was controlled and only a few times did the police step in and almost never in response to a Tea Party member outburst. America shouldn’t be scared of them. America should be scared of the leaders offering very few solutions.

Speakers like Mike Church asking, “How many of you out there are fans of modern day slavery?” and the talk-show host Andrew Wilkow simplifying taxes as “sending money to Washington and not getting it back,” was the rhetorical fodder of the first hour and a half. The speakers pointed out problems with taxes, encroachment on individual liberties and big government financial concerns with fanatical zeal. They did not however state many solutions. Only McFarland had a path when she stated America couldn’t change “unless the right candidates are elected” and called the crowd to vote at local polls.

Minutes before Lou Dobbs called the crowd “dangerous”, Nick Rizzuto, producer of “The Wilkow Majority”, said, “Our motives can be summed up in one word: principal.” Now, the President may not throw many strikes, but he’s trying, and the “motive” for the Tea Party’s existence should be to find answers not problems and until that happens, America should be afraid of them.

Mackenzie Bearup feels crippling pain everyday. In 5th grade, she got shooting pains in her knee that “felt like a bomb was going off.” Doctors diagnosed her with reflex sympathetic dystrophy — meaning anytime something touches her knee (even the wind) she feels immense pain.

Reading was the only pain reliever that actually worked. Mackenzie began volunteering at a home for abused children and collecting books for them. She started an organization called Sheltering Books to collect books for children in need. Mackenzie has collected 38,000 books to donate to libraries, reading rooms and 27 shelters in six states.

Mackenzie believes that novels can turn people’s lives around. “I really think reading can do that to someone,” she says.

Mackenzie Bearup is featured as part of CNN’s “Heroes” series. A group of CNN Heroes are selected each year to be honored at an annual ceremony in November, with one CNN Hero chosen to receive a large sum of money to continue his/her work. Last year’s winner was Efren Peñaflorida.

When Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele was suffering from one of his earlier political crises — a series of communications gaffes that had fellow Republicans scratching their heads — he sought to stem the bleeding by bringing in noted GOP strategist Alex Castellanos as a confidant.

The arrangement was always a bit hazy but the message was quite clear: the newby Steele was turning to the old guard for guidance. The ship, in short, would quickly be righted.

Flash forward four months and one massively embarrassing spending scandal later and it seems quite clear that even Castellanos now views the Steele tenure as unpalatable for Republicans. On Tuesday, the longtime CNN contributor went on air to make it very clear that the chairman should step down for the good of the party.

Here are a few of the (many) choice Castellanos quotes.

• “Chairman Steele I think has lost the support of two important constituencies in the Republican Party, one is our most successful candidates our leaders on the Hill in the House and Senate… But more importantly, he’s lost the support of a lot of our major donors, the donors who provide the money, the lifeblood, the oxygen the Republican Party needs to succeed on its mission to take back control of the House.”
• “This is nothing personal. This is about a party that has a cause, and that is rescuing this country from bankruptcy. And we have a responsibility as Republicans, I think, to provide the support that our candidates need to do that. And right now, I don’t think that you’re seeing a lot of that money that is frozen, it’s not coming into the Party, and perhaps a change in leadership here would thaw that and allow that support to flow.”

So, what do you want Michael Steele to do?” host Wolf Blitzer asked.

• “I think what you’re going to see is you’re going to see some of the members of the Republican Executive Committee… are going to have to have a come to Jesus moment… and either come to terms with Chairman Steele on what he’s going to do and conduct himself through the next election, or else take a different direction. And I think sometimes a change in leadership would be a good thing.”

You want him to resign for the good of the party? Blitzer asked.

• “For the good of the party it would be good. And, again, it’s not about one person, but without that financial support — look, we’re not going to be as successful as we need to be for the country, and that’s important for all of us…. We can’t have one hand, the RNC, tied behind our back.”
• “I do think that without the support of our major donors and without the support of our leaders on the Hill, our party won’t be as successful, and I think the executive committee needs to look at this and say we still have seven months to go to pull our act together. Should we suffer through seven months as we or do we, in fact, need to make a change now? I think a change at this moment would be a good thing.”

Pete Seeger recorded “Turn, Turn, Turn (To Everything There is a Season),” his musical rendition of a passage from the Book of Ecclesiastes, in 1962. Judy Collins covered it in 1963 and The Byrds re-covered it in 1965, providing a nice set of musical brackets for one of the Sixties’ non-musical greatest hits — Mario Savio’s free speech call to arms on the UC Berkeley campus in 1964.

And you, you apprehensive parent of a high-school senior, you’re wondering: Why is she telling me this when all I want to do is fret, snack mindlessly, wake up in the middle of the night, and stalk the guy or gal who delivers the mail?

Because the first notifications you’re going to get are from state universities, that’s why, and because California is turn, turn, turning toward a new season of protests, one that could be the biggest thing since Savio’s day.

Last week, what was supposed to be a party turned into the full monty, protest-wise: flaming dumpsters, cops, the occupation of a building, and references to outside agitators, because after all, what do University of California students facing a 30-plus percent tuition hike have to complain about unless someone stirs them up?

Trouble has been brewing and occasionally boiling over since last fall, when the state of California announced the system-wide hikes for next year in the face of an $813 million deficit, along with cuts in curriculum and services. Kind of a simultaneous binge and purge approach to budget management, which we know isn’t healthy.

Pundits speculated on the future, in particular, of UC Berkeley, the jewel in the crown, the first campus in the UC chain, lovingly and definitively referred to as Cal, as though it were still the one and only.

Berkeley, the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and a handful of other state schools have always been the smart choice for people who didn’t mind going to a school the size of a small city, people who loved the idea (and who wouldn’t) that for half the price (or less) of a private institution you got the same education or better.

But now California intends to change the equation – and protestors, perhaps recognizing that acceptance season is a nicely ironic time to get people focused on higher education, have scheduled a march on Sacramento for March 4. The Day of Action in Defense of Public Education takes place just as the UC system starts to let people know who’s lucky enough to qualify for a downsized UC education.

Angry yet? It gets worse. The seemingly recession-proof cost of a private undergraduate education has sent more people scurrying for the relatively safe haven of a state-supported education, which is still a relative bargain, even with the rate hikes. That means more competition for the slimmed-down spots – which sends more students, in turn, toward community colleges that are scrambling to accommodate the increase in applicants.

Those of us whose children are already in college have begun to hear the nasty next-step mantra, which is, A bachelor’s degree doesn’t mean a thing in this economy. Great. Seems like just the right time for California to make it harder for its students to get any degree at all.

Perhaps that is why the great wave of indignant undergraduates will be joined on the 4th by an unusual auxiliary group: Several members of the UC Board of Regents, as well as the president of the UC system, have announced that they’ll attend the march.

Note to politicians, as you debate which classes to euthanize: Consider keeping the basic English composition classes, and make sure there’s a grammar component. CNN ran its affiliate KCRA’s report on the CNN web site, and the following sentence leapt out at me.

“CNN affiliate KCRA captured footage of students outside the building shouting, ‘Who’s university? Our university!’”

Actually, the correct spelling would be “Whose university.” “Who’s” is a contraction; that little apostrophe takes the place of a missing letter “I”. The sentence, as it stands, means “Who is university?”.

We is university, seems to be the answer this time, from both the students and the Regents. Let’s see if that unusual alliance will inspire legislators to find a different way to plug an $813 million hole.

Car makers on Tuesday are expected to report disappointing U.S. sales for February, mainly due to snowstorms in the Northeast and Midwest that kept customers away from dealerships.

The quality crisis at Toyota Motor Corp. also is predicted to have hurt sales for that company by at least about 25%, according to industry forecasting firm TrueCar.

Others makers are likely to see gains, partly at the expense of Toyota, and partly because of increased sales to rental-car companies and other “fleet” customers.

February sales at Ford Motor Co., Hyundai Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co. are expected to have risen by 25% or more while General Motors Co. could report an increase of 16%, according to Edmunds.com, an auto shopping and forecasting site.

Plane Crash Austin, Echelon Building Austin, AUSTIN, Texas: A low-flying small plane crashed into an office building that houses the Internal Revenue Service in Austin, Texas on Thursday, and at least one person was missing, witnesses and officials said.

Assistant Austin Fire Chief Harry Evans said two people have also been taken to a hospital. Their conditions were not immediately known.

A law enforcement official said the crash did not initially appear to be the result of a crime or terrorism. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to publicly discuss the crash.

Thick black and gray smoke was billowing out of the second and third stories of the building Thursday as fire crews using ladder trucks and hoses battled the fire. Dozens of windows were blown out of the hulking black building, and vehicles traveling on a nearby highway paused to look.

Peggy Walker, an IRS revenue officer who works in the building said she was sitting at her desk when the plane crashed.

“It felt like a bomb blew off. The ceiling caved in and windows blew in. We got up and ran,” she said.

Matt Farney, 39, who was in the parking lot of a nearby Home Depot, said he saw a low-flying private plane near some apartments and the office building just before it crashed.

“I figured he was going to buzz the apartments or he was showing off,” Farney said, adding that the plane dipped down. “It was a ball of flames that was high or higher than the apartments. It was surreal. It was insane. … It didn’t look like he was out of control or anything.”

Sitting at her desk about a half-mile from the crash, Michelle Santibanez said she felt vibrations. She and her co-workers ran to the windows, where they saw a scene that reminded them of the 2001 terrorist attacks, she said.

“It was the same kind of scenario with window panels falling out and desks falling out and paperwork flying,” said Santibanez, an accountant.

Fire crews were inside the building battling the blaze and looking for survivors, Evans said.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Lynn Lunsford said the agency was investigating but had no immediate information on the type of plane or how many people were on board.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Former President Bill Clinton has been taken to hospital in New York with chest pains, U.S. media said.

CNN cited two sources close to the former president, 63, as saying he was suffering from chest pains.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Former U.S. President Bill Clinton underwent a successful heart procedure on Thursday to open a blocked artery in his heart with two stents after he had experienced chest discomfort, his spokesman said.

Clinton, 63, had quadruple heart bypass surgery in 2004 to free up four blocked arteries and the latest incident comes after he has traveled twice to Haiti to help recovery efforts after a devastating earthquake there.

“Today, President Bill Clinton was admitted to the Columbia Campus of New York Presbyterian Hospital after feeling discomfort in his chest,” Douglas Band, counselor to Clinton, said in a statement.

“Following a visit to his cardiologist, he underwent a procedure to place two stents in one of his coronary arteries. President Clinton is in good spirits, and will continue to focus on the work of his foundation and Haiti’s relief and long-term recovery efforts,” Band said.

Clinton’s wife, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, arrived at the hospital at about 7:30 p.m., joining daughter Chelsea.

A senior administration official told Reuters that Secretary Clinton’s departure to Qatar and Saudi Arabia, originally planned for Friday, was delayed until Saturday. The official said the delay would not affect her schedule of meetings in the two countries.

The White House said Clinton spoke to President Barack Obama and told the president he felt “absolutely great” after the procedure.

“The president spoke to former President Clinton shortly before 7 p.m. tonight and wished him a speedy recovery,” the White House said in a statement. “He said that the efforts in Haiti were too important for him to be laid up for too long and hopes he’ll be ready to get back to work as soon as possible.”

Having stents placed in heart arteries is a relatively quick and routine procedure among patients like Clinton who have suffered from heart disease.

Stents are tiny mesh tubes used to prop open heart arteries that have been cleared of blockages via angioplasty. They are now often coated with drugs to help prevent reclogging.

Clinton’s chest pains were possibly caused by failing grafts from the quadruple bypass heart surgery he had six years ago, a cardiologist said on Thursday.

“If he had four grafts it is not surprising that one of them would start to fail by now,” said Dr. Cam Patterson of the University of North Carolina, adding they last on average about 10 years. [nN1161598]

Clinton was president from 1993 until 2001 and like many Americans he has struggled with his weight.

He presided over eight years of economic prosperity and political tumult during a presidency tarnished by a sex-and-perjury scandal that led to his impeachment and a bitter fight to stay in office.

While in office he was known for his love of burgers and junk food and was also seen regularly jogging.

After his 2004 operation he has looked fitter than while he was president — something he attributed to the South Beach diet, which excludes processed foods and favors lean meat.

Clinton joined with former President George H.W. Bush in a public campaign to raise money for survivors of the December 26, 2004, tsunami in Asia that killed more than 300,000 people.

He also established a foundation to build his legacy beyond the White House which has pushed big companies and rich people to actively try to fix some of the world’s worst problems.

ENVOY TO HAITI

Most recently Clinton, as U.N. special envoy to Haiti, has coordinated relief efforts after the January 12 Haiti earthquake. His wife, Hillary Clinton, is the current U.S. secretary of state under President Obama.

David Sherzer, spokesman for former President George W. Bush, said in a statement, “President Bush spoke to Chelsea Clinton this afternoon and was glad to hear that her father is doing well and that his spirits are high.” Clinton and Bush are working together on Haiti relief.

Just before his 2004 surgery, Clinton spoke on CNN’s “Larry King Live,” about his heart blockage: “Some of this is genetic and I may have done some damage in those years when I was too careless about what I ate … I’ve got a problem and I’ve got a chance to deal with it,” Clinton said.

Clinton, a former governor of Arkansas, presided over the nation’s longest economic boom but had many policy setbacks, most notably on his plans for healthcare overhaul which he tried to tackle when he took office in 1993.

He remains popular despite the sex-and-perjury scandal involving his affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky that indelibly marked his presidency.

The self-styled “man from Hope” was back on the presidential campaign trail in 2007 and 2008 when Hillary Clinton sought the White House on her own.

He was criticized for his stump style and some partly blamed him for her loss. Black leaders, long among his strongest allies, felt he demeaned then-Senator Obama with off-the-cuff comments about the role of race in politics.

Since Obama won the nomination and the subsequent election, Clinton has worked to repair any damage and he visits the White House occasionally for talks with the president.

Bill Clinton Hospitalized in NYC, Receives Heart Stents

Former President Bill Clinton was hospitalized today in New York City.

Clinton  Said Clinton’s Counselor Douglas Band in a statement:  “Today President Bill Clinton was admitted to the Columbia Campus of New York Presbyterian Hospital after feeling discomfort in his chest. Following a visit to his cardiologist, he underwent a procedure to place two stents in one of his coronary arteries. President Clinton is in good spirits, and will continue to focus on the work of his Foundation and Haiti’s relief and long-term recovery efforts. In 2004, President Clinton underwent a successful quadruple bypass operation to free four blocked arteries.”

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was said to be traveling to NYC from Washington this afternoon. Chelsea Clinton was at the hospital with her father, CNN reported.

Heading into the critical 2010 midterm elections, will launch a new weekday political program that will be hosted by award winning correspondent John King.
“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity, at this busy and consequential time, to have a platform to discuss and explore the big issues of our time,” King, chief national correspondent and anchor of the network’s Sunday program “State of the Union,” said in a statement released Thursday by.

Early next year, King will move into the 7 p.m. ET time slot that was previously held by longtime CNN anchor Lou Dobbs, who announced Wednesday that he was leaving the network.

“The program will reflect what CNN is all about: straight facts from our anchors and the widest range of opinions from across the political spectrum,” Jonathan Klein, president of CNN/U.S., said in the network’s statement. “John has enthralled CNN viewers with his vast political knowledge, and he has spent the past year reporting from beyond the Beltway on pressing policy issues and the real people they impact. Every night, he’ll share his passion and his insights about what is really going on in Washington and across America.”

CNN did not announce the name of King’s new program and in the statement said he would “continue to anchor ‘State of the Union’ until early next year.”

NEW DELHI: Bollywood actress and IPL teamowner Preity Zinta spent 10 minutes stuck in a toilet at the Delhi airport last night.

“I spent 10 minutes stuck in the toilet at the airport. Finally had to climb the wall and jump over… People were calling out my name,” the actress, who was to board a Mumbai-bound flight, wrote on her Twitter account.

“Being a tomboy when I was younger definitely helped. Trying to climb a wall is never easy,” she said, adding that the incident happened as the door got jammed.

Preity said, “I thought I was going to die as I am claustrophobic.”

LOS ANGELES: Depp isn’t dead! Bizarre as that may sound, this rather obvious piece of news has taken the online world by storm, as it was recently ‘reported’ that actor Johnny Depp had died in a car crash in France.

The false report surfaced around Saturday last week, with a fake CNN webpage on a website called angelfire.com showing a picture of a car crash and reporting that Depp had died. ‘Alcohol is most likely involved,’ the reports added. The online world of bloggers and tweeters immediately started to buzz with shocked ‘RIP Johnny’ messages.

However, the actor’s rep, Robin Baum, was quoted by a website as saying, “He isn’t dead.” Depp is the latest in a series of celebs to have been ‘killed off’ in this manner, and this isn’t even the first time for him. Earlier this week news began spreading of the former Gators quarterback Tim Tebow and his role in a Superbowl ad paid for by well known Christian organization — Focus On the Family. The ad is supposed to highlight the story of Pam Tebow who after becoming ill on the mission field refused doctor’s suggestions to abort her 5th child, Heisman trophy winner Tim Tebow. The CBS network has already approved the script for the ad which is set to air during this year’s Superbowl and expected to promote a theme of “Celebrating Family and Life.”

Today, SI.com reported that a coalition of women’s groups called on CBS to scrap its plan to broadcast the ad during the Super Bowl featuring college football star Tim Tebow and his mother, which is by nature likely to convey an anti-abortion message.

The New York-based Women’s Media Center was coordinating the protest with backing from the National Organization for Women, the Feminist Majority and other groups.

“An ad that uses sports to divide rather than to unite has no place in the biggest national sports event of the year — an event designed to bring Americans together,” said Jehmu Greene, president of the Women’s Media Center.

There has also been criticism from current sports journalists who oppose the discussion of abortion being brought to the public on Superbowl Sunday. A columnist for CBSSports.com, Gregg Doyel, also objected to the CBS decision to show the ad, specifically because it would air on Super Sunday.

“If you’re a sports fan, and I am, that’s the holiest day of the year,” he wrote. “It’s not a day to discuss abortion. For it, against it, I don’t care what you are. On Super Sunday, I don’t care what I am. Feb. 7 is simply not the day to have that discussion.”

The controversy over the ad was raised Sunday when Tebow met with reporters.

“I know some people won’t agree with it, but I think they can at least respect that I stand up for what I believe,” Tebow said. “I’ve always been very convicted of it (his views on abortion) because that’s the reason I’m here, because my mom was a very courageous woman. So any way that I could help, I would do it.”

I’ve never been a fan of the Gators, which usually put me rooting against Tim Tebow for the last few years. But on this issue, I’ll be the first to stand with Tim Tebow and argue that if given the opportunity he should not have to censor the story of his life for people who don’t like the message it may convey.

Tim Tebow should not have to be silenced simply because telling his story implies that his life was sincerely valuable to his mother.

No one to my knowledge has begun to cry out against godaddy.com’s sexually provocative commercials set to air during the Superbowl, which founder Bob Parsons claims will be the “hottest” ads yet.

When someone does a good deed, should they be forced never to tell the story simply because there may be someone who presented with the same situation acted differently? This isn’t about whether you believe Roe vs. Wade should be overturned or not, this about whether or not we should be permitted to tell a good story.

If my life is imperfect in an area, is it OK for me to censor all people who have achieved success in that area of life? Am I allowed to close my ears to anyone who hasn’t lived their life just as I have lived mine? No, I don’t believe so.

So given the opportunity to tell his story, with whatever message it may by nature convey, Tim Tebow, tell your story. It is in fact divisive, but so is the gospel of Jesus Christ. The gospel divides the believers from the un-believers, and the result of our beliefs is not a matter of option, but one of either eternal peace or eternal damnation.

But I’ll stop now, my language just got highly divisive and unfit to be told in public, and especially not during the Superbowl.

BORDEAUX, France (CNN) — Johnny Depp’s car was found along side a road outside Bordeaux, France, with the guard rail embedded deep inside the car.

A tourist was driving down the road when he saw a car wreck alongside the road. He stepped out and tried to see if anyone was in there while his wife dialed the police for help.
To his dismay, he found the a body in the car among liquor bottles.

The police arrived at the scene shortly after and pulled out the body of the former actor, Johnny Depp.

The police suspect that alcohal was the cause of the accident.

A source with the British embassy said the entire expedition group is to fly back to London on Friday.

Among the cavers were four members of the British navy.

Unless you’re brand new to computers, the recent news that an Internet Explorer hole was exploited in China-based attacks against Google Gmail users and dozens of high-tech companies was no surprise.

Lately, malware has increasingly targeted holes in media players such as Adobe’s Flash Player and Reader PDF software, so the Chinese attack on IE is in some ways a throwback. Many tech pundits have responded by recommending against using Internet Explorer at all. The free and easy availability of alternative browsers such as Firefox, Opera, Apple’s Safari, and Google’s own Chrome would appear to make this sound advice.

Unfortunately, some Internet users don’t have a choice of browser. The Web sites of many organizations use custom applications that require IE. More importantly, Windows itself relies on Internet Explorer to receive updates and for other behind-the-scenes operations. Even if you never open IE, you still need to make sure the browser is fully patched and up to date.

The Chrysler Group has not got of to a great start to 2010, the automaker are recalling 24,000 of their Dodge and Jeep vehicles. The reason behind the recall is due a defective part, this could then cause the brakes could fail.

This latest recall will not be good news to those who own certain 2009 and 2010 models, which you can get a full list of from CNN Money. These include, Grand Cherokee SUVs, Chrysler Sebring, and Dodge Avenger’s and Nitro’s.

The defective part is a rod-retaining clip on the brake booster, it seem that it has been fitted incorrectly. There are even reports that in some Ram trucks, the part has not even been fitted. As you can imagine this is a serious safety risk, one that needs addressing fast.

Thankfully there has not been any accidents relating to the brake issue, but the automaker is working closely with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to put this recall in to action fast. The problem was not spotted by an owner of one of the affected vehicles, but by Chrysler factory workers.

While at a factory in Mexico, a Dodge Ram was undergoing a brake test when it experienced a complete loss of brake power. Fort Hood Texas Shooting

Fort Hood Texas Shooting, This is covered on television and just happened by what apparently and reportedly is an upset set of of soldiers at Fort Hood, Texas, near Waco, Texas. There are reports of up to three gunmen, one already arrested, two others the subject of a search. 7 are dead and 12 are injured.

Fort Hood is on lockdown now; the 55,000 people not allowed to go anywhere.

There was a graduation ceremony going on at the time of the shooting, according to MSNBC and CNN. The shooting happened at the solidier readiness facility on the base.
