Kd Lang Hallelujah, k d lang, k.d. lang: Canadian pop music royalty glowed tonight at the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in the 21st Vancouver, Canada. One of the top musical moments was an impressive performance of the Canadian poet and songwriter Leonard Cohen song “Hallelujah” by Canadian singer kd lang. He recorded the song in 2004 for her album Hymns of the 49th parallel. She also played “Hallelujah” at the Juno Awards 2005. In the past three years, the song has gained iconic status. In 2008, American Idol contestant Jason Castro gave a performance that generated such interest in Jeff Buckley’s song, much admired 1994 recording of “Hallelujah” topped the Billboard Digital Tracks Chart. Later that same year, Alexandra Burke X Factor winner topped the outbreak hits the UK with his version and Jeff Buckley’s “Hallelujah” reached # 2. More recently Justin Timberlake was at # 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 with his rendition of “Hallelujah” of hope for Haiti Now telethon.
Earlier in the ceremonies of great Canadian pop star Nelly Furtado and Bryan Adams performed a duet on a song called “Bang the Drum”, written by Adams. Sarah McLachlan joined the parade of stars with a solo performance on piano. In another tribute to the powerful pop of Canada, Joni Mitchell classic “Both Sides Now”, the backdrop for an air movement and dance. Finally, Anne Murray, one of the singers of pop music, best selling of all time, was a remarkable Canadian personalities chosen for the official Olympic flag at the stadium.
